Actor Christian Bale goes method again as he loses weight for new film role

Five years after Christian Bale's weight plummeted to 8st 6lbs for a film role, the actor is going to extremes again.
The British actor is looking incredibly thin again to prepare for his role as a druggie ex-boxer in upcoming film The Fighter.
In contrast to his bulked up appearance in Terminator Salvation, the 6ft actor cut an emaciated figure as he was spotted on set in Boston, Massachusetts yesterday.

Super skinny me: Christian Bale looks gaunt and thin as he films scenes as drug addict Dickie Ecklund in The Fighter on location in Boston

Christian's recent weight loss isn't the first time the actor has gone to extremes for a film role.
In 2004, he lost five stone to play emaciated insomniac Trevor Reznik in The Machinist by barely sleeping and surviving on a diet of coffee and apples.
After landing the role of the Caped Crusader in Batman Begins soon after, Christian swiftly bulked up his tiny 121 pound (8st 6lb) frame in just six weeks.
For his six foot height, Christian's ideal body weight would be between 11 and 13 stone, according to BMI (body mass index) tables.

And now he is putting his body through the strain again in preparing for The Fighter.

Shrinking frame: Christian's new frame is much more slender than his healthier physique at the Los Angeles premiere of Terminator Salvation in May (right)

Spotted in between scenes on location in Boston, Christian looked gaunt and thin as he walked to his trailer.
In contrast, his on-screen brother Wahlberg had regained his six-pack from his Calvin Klein underwear modelling days as he strolled outside in silk boxing shorts sporting a bloodied nose.
The Fighter is based on the true story of American welterweight boxer Micky 'Irish' Ward (Mark Wahlberg) and his half-brother Dickie Ecklund.
A welterweight boxer typically weighs in at between 140 pounds (10st) and 147 pounds (10.5st).
Ecklund was eight years older than his brother and was a regular on the American boxing circuit in the late Seventies and early Eighties.
He retired from the sport in 1985 and became trainer to his brother before Ward first retired in 1991.

Gaunt: Christian's weight loss has made him appear hollow-cheeked

Away from the ring, Ecklund was addicted to crack cocaine and spent time in prison on various charges, including drug possession.

To prepare for the film, Christian has been following a special diet and has started taking boxing lessons.
He said: 'Iíve had to loose a great deal of weight because he was a welterweight.'

Both Ward and Ecklund are consultants on the movie and have been working closely wit the actors who play them.
Christian enthused: 'Thereís nothing like boxing for getting you in shape. Itís a wonderful thing when your trainer is actually the person youíre playing.
'Itís a true story of two incredibly gifted boxers who were half brothers.
'The one, Dicky Ecklund, who fought Sugar Ray Leonard at a very young age, when he was twenty one, was an incredible natural talent. He lived a very hard life. Then he came to train his brother, Irish Mickey Ward, to the world title.'
Christian's weight has yo-yo'd in accordance with his film roles over the year.
In his breakout film American Psycho, Christian beefed up and gained a six pack for his many topless scenes in the thriller.
When he started filming Batman Begins just six weeks after completing The Machinist, Christian gorged on pizza and ice-cream in the hope of regaining his lost five stone.
He said: 'The director, Christopher Nolan, asked me to try and put on as much weight as I could because he would find it very difficult to convince the studio to cast me if I was a beanpole.

'In doing so I overdid it because I was enjoying gorging. I was ignoring advice about taking it slowly because my stomach had shrunk, and I should just go with soups.
'I was straight into pizza and ice-cream and eating five meals in a sitting. My stomach expanded really quickly. I got very sick during that time but I enjoyed getting sick. I didn't mind it at all.
'In that short amount of time I did actually go from 121 (pounds) right back up to 180 (pounds) which is way too fast so that resulted in some doctor visits to get things sorted out.'

Oh Christian. I love you so much and you do this to yourself again. Watching The Machinist was just an uncomfortable experience for me, made even worse with the contrast at the end where part of the film he is normal weight.

His hair looks like it's thinning too. Not good

It does look like he's losing his hair. I used to like him. Lately I think he's a bit of a weirdo. He might be putting his health at risk doing such extreme weight loss and gain.

I see Christian has accepted what he is, and proudly displays it on his shirt.

What he has done to his body, extreme lows then building muscle, can't be good on his heart.

I totally disagree with these extreme weight losses and gains simply for movie roles. It was already way old when DeNiro did it for Raging Bull.

I mean, does it really enhance the role? I don't think so, especially not when it puts your life at risk, that is plain stupid and unnecessary.

The most stupid are guys that gain weight simply to have an excuse to pig out. Like Clooney and Crowe. What does being fat have to do with being an agent and whatnot? So being fat equates with negative character traits?

    These method actors are ridiculous.

Things like this remind me of Laurence Olivier telling Dustin Hoffman (who had stayed awake all night to shoot a scene in Marathon Man where he was supposed to be exhausted) "My dear boy, why don't you try acting?"

He is seriously ruining his looks by doing this extreme back-and-forth stuff. Now, even when he's more bulked up, he still looks gaunt and drawn in the face. And starting to look old. He doesn't care though.....

I believe the hair- or lack thereof is specifically movie magic for the role.

He starved himself for both 'The Machinist' and 'Rescue Dawn' so I'd imagine he's starving himself this time too.

This is going to take its toll on him eventually.

Can't ruin looks that aren't there in the first place.
