'Dream Girls,' 'Babel' among Oscar contenders

    By Jack Garner
    Gannett News Service

“Dreamgirls” was both the big winner and the big loser as Academy Award nominations were announced today. It received the most nominations — eight — but failed to secure nods as either a best picture nominee or for its director, Bill Condon.

The nominees for best picture are “Babel,” “The Departed,” “Letters From Iwo Jima,” “Little Miss Sunshine” and “The Queen.”

Otherwise, most of the expected favorites were in place for possible wins, including Helen Mirren (“The Queen”) for best actress, and Forest Whitaker (“The Last King of Scotland”) for best actor. Mirren’s competition is Judi Dench (“Notes on a Scandal”), Penelope Cruz (“Volver”), Meryl Streep (“The Devil Wears Prada”) and Kate Winslet (“Little Children”). And Whitaker’s is Leonardo DiCaprio (“Blood Diamond”), Ryan Gosling (“Half Nelson”), Peter O’Toole (“Venus”) and Will Smith (“The Pursuit of Happyness”).

The biggest accomplishment of “Dreamgirls” is placement of two actors in supporting categories — Eddie Murphy among the men and Jennifer Hudson among the women.

The other nominees for best supporting actor are Alan Arkin (“Little Miss Sunshine”), Jackie Earle Haley (“Little Children”), Djimon Hounsou (“Blood Diamond”) and Mark Wahlberg (“The Departed”). The other nominees for best supporting actress are Adriana Barraza (“Babel”), Cate Blanchett (“Notes on a Scandal”), Abigail Breslin (“Little Miss Sunshine”) and Rinko Kikuchi (“Babel”).

And, once again, the night’s most dramatic competition will be between two legendary directors: Martin Scorsese (for his Irish mob movie, “The Departed”) and Clint Eastwood (for his all-Japanese World War II epic, “Letters from Iwo Jima”).

The other directing nominees are Stephen Frears (“The Queen”), Paul Greengrass (“United 93”) and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (“Babel”).

Eastwood has twice been a recent winner — for “Million Dollar Baby” and “Unforgiven” — and was a nominee for “Mystic River.”

Scorsese, meanwhile, remains the greatest living director to have never won an Academy Award, despite long-lasting acclaim for films like “Taxi Driver,” “Raging Bull,” and “Goodfellas.”

ABC will broadcast the Oscars live February 25 from Hollywood’s Kodak Theatre.

No one really expected Beyonce' to get a knod, did they? Watch Sheryl Lee Ralph from the original Dream Girls on Broadway. She Blows Beyonce' off the screen.
I hear Forest Whitiker is going to win but my favorite was Ryan Goslin. Ryan Gosling - HALF NELSON
This guy is a real actor. All the actors are great this year. I'm actually surprised Brad Pitt didn't get a NOD.
There are 2 great supporting actors. I hope you all get to see these movies.
Jackie Earle Haley - LITTLE CHILDREN
    Mark Wahlberg - THE DEPARTED
    both simply amazing actors.

Surprised that there's no nom for Jack Nicholson but SUPER HAPPY for Mark Wahlberg and for Brad Shitt not getting nominated!!! Now Mangie won't have to suffer the red carpet and they can go to some super depressing country instead.

LOL, i was thinking the same thing about Angie. Although it would have been fun to see if her attitude had changed at all, or if she even did the red carpet at all... Oh well.

I have to say I'm glad Jack didn't get the nomination. There are way more deserving actors out there, and Marky Mark totally stole that movie in every scene he was in. Usually, all Jack has to do is appear onscreen and he gets nominated. I feel like the same is starting to be true of Clint Eastwood. I did love Mystic River and Million Dollar Baby, but he's definitely starting to look like an Academy favorite.

True.General opinion is that he's been coasting since his last real ACTING part in Reds. Since then he's been doing variations from "The Jack Nicholson Teeth and Eyebrows show".

Why did Dreamgirls get three nominations for best song? C'mon, there had to be some other songs out there. (I just can't stand Beyonce, which is why I am bitching.)
