    Default Tortured Beauties - China

Only wanted to share this. Seeing that the Far East beauty standards is one of the subjects that are being discussed here. I don't have much to say about it, other than it's like the western world to the extreme.

I'm of SE Asian descent so I can relate somewhat. I have some East Asian friends (Chinese and Korean) who are obsessed with their appearance. The skin has to be pale, the eyes must be double lidded, and you have to be really slim to be considered attractive. Hower, I disagree in the beginning of the commentary that "white skin is chic" in modern China. That's nothing new. Pale/fair skin has been desired for centuries even before the West ever entered the picture.

This was really interesting, thank you Dubah for sharing.

I have been reading about the pale skin obsession dating back way back when too.

The double lidded surgery is a major craze now, in a bid to look more Occidental.

That leg extension surgery = woah. That was brutal to watch (as short as it was).

A South Korean colleague came to work in the London office for a couple of weeks and she told me I was the most beautiful girl in the whole of London, now I'm figuring it's less to do with my genetic fortune and more to do with the fact I am the colour of milk in the Antarctic surrounded by polar bears.

It's somewhat sad that they want a more "western" look, when most of them are really beautiful just the way they are

There's that old racist cliche "they all look the same to me" when discussing Asians. They are now having this ridiculous PS to look more different and unique and "western" and they have the same procedures so they still look almost indistinguishable from each other. Check out some K-Pop or J-Pop videos and you'll see what I mean. The music all sounds the same too but that's another discussion. Male singers have even more PS than the women I reckon judging by their vanilla pretty boy faces. I can only assume young Asian girls go squee for that androgynous look. My fave group is Shinee.

    NB These are blokes.

AO, you're scaring me. Shinee? They're pretty good! I like Big Bang, MBLAQ and Super Junior, too. They're the more "newer" K-pop boy bands. I've been listening to K-pop since the early 90's. Anyway, K-pop is huge throughout many parts of Asia. While most in the West haven't heard of these boy bands, they're pretty well known in Asia. And, yeah, it seems it's the standard for girl members AND boy members to have plastic surgery. They end up looking very similar because there's a facial template that surgeons follow (photos of Korean celebrities) according to my Korean friends.

We get Pop Asia TV shows here and they are hilarious. Trust me, I am NOT a fan but I can't help watching in appalled fascination.

Girl, you watch Pop Asian TV Shows? Hahahaha! Awesome! I understand what you mean by appalled fascination. The shows can be absolutely cheesy as hell, but I enjoy watching it for the corny factor. It's entertaining!

When I travelled in SE Asia this summer I experienced the reverse. There was this Irish blond girl, my height but otherwise we didn't look anything like each other but in the eyes of the tourguide we were identical twins. It was hillarous, every roll call I got a nod twice. On the no flag boat in Bangkok, I had to insist on paying and getting a ticket because the woman just kept walking passed me, thinking I'd already paid. It was surreal but great, I was so exotic, the Japanese tourists took photos of me in Cambodia and a Southern Thai couple on holiday spent 10 minutes trying to approach me to stand in their family pictures with them in a museum.
I feel sad when I see these PS-ed Asian faces... But one thing is for sure, PS-ed Asian face -though plastic- looks much better than your average Caucasian PS-ed plastic face.

I watched the video clip once again and I didn't notice it the first time around, but the model who looked "Western" used double eyelid tape. It's quite common for monolid/hooded Asians to use tape/special glue to create a crease.Or if they're already double-lidded, the tape makes the crease even larger/visible. Idk if you guys are aware of this, but half of Asians (East and SE) have monolids meaning no crease while the other half have double lids. I'm the ONLY member of my immediate family and relatives who has hooded eyelids and I contemplated having surgery when I was a young girl. I endured racial taunts regarding my eyes and I was made to feel ugly as shit. I thought if I fixed my eyes, the taunts would stop. Thankfully, my mother put a stop to that nonsense, but I won't say I'd never have eyelid surgery. If I did go through with it, it wouldn't be to appear Western. It would be age-related. Anyway, I will admit I dabbled with eyelid tape in the past out of mere curiosity to see what I would look like if I had surgery.
