Britain has new weapon against loitering youths -- Sonic Teenager Deterrent

Shopkeepers in central England have been trying out a new device that emits an uncomfortable high-pitched noise designed to disperse young loiterers outside their stores without bothering adults.

Police carrying out the pilot project in Staffordshire say some of those who have tested the "Sonic Teenager Deterrent," nicknamed the mosquito, have talked of buying one of their own.

The device which costs 622 pounds (908 euros, 1,081 dollars) "doesn't cause any pain to the hearer," according to Inspector Amanda Davies, quoted by Britain's domestic Press Association news agency.

"The noise can normally only be heard by those between 12 and 22 and it makes the listener feel uncomfortable," she added.

Once in their early 20s, people lose their capacity to hear sounds at such a high pitch.

"It is controlled by the shopkeepers. If they can see through their window that there is a problem, they turn the device on for a few minutes until the group has dispersed," Davies said.

"Shop owners have reported fabulous results and we've been approached by some who are considering buying their own equipment," she said.

I think I still prefer more traditional methods of teenage dispersal like water cannon for minor infractions or a bren gun.

They have something easier to use -- Mozart. Just pump classical
music over the PA system in your store and the teens will leave.
Put some speakers outside and they won't congregate out front.

There is nothing new about this device, though. It's being heralded as "new" and it's been known about for quite some time. There's no way it ought to cost this much either. Somebody's making a significant profit. I actually made one years ago with some friends to get rid of our roomies boyfriend(long story!) and it cost around two dollars for the parts from Radio Shack. We set the frequency to be just above human hearing so there was no sound to it. It really does make one feel uneasy and if you stick around for any length of time, you will find yourself with a splitting headache. Yes, I know it was mean!

I think this is crap. The british press talk about teenagers like they're the scourge of the earth. I was in London a few months ago and our taxi driver saw a few kids walking down the street--they were probably around 15--and he went into a major rant, unprovoked, about the 'lazy, criminal, layabouts' etc etc. and if you read the UK press regularly, you start getting the impression that everyone between the ages of 12 and 20 is a menace to society. It's fucked up.

um, teenagers are supposed to loaf around, get into trouble, and generally make mistakes. That's part of growing up.

Why don't older people remember that about their own adolescent years?

I agree with Grimm. Kids loiter and get into minor scrapes. It's part of the job description. I pity my children for growing up in such an unforgiving world.
