A great deal has been said by people who knew Bourdain well, including that he was suffering from untreated or undertreated depression. He himself described depressive states. I do not personally assume that all suicides are caused by depression, however the link is extremely strong. Strong enough that experts say most suicidal people have depression, even if the immediate apparent trigger was something else, and whether they had dual diagnoses, etc.

Honestly, I'm surprised about all the commenting on how little he saw his daughter (not just here but elsewhere). Most single dads without shared custody or generous visitation see their kids, at best, every other weekend (in my own experience and with those I know). That's slightly more than 7 weeks a year. Normally, they're geographically closer to their children as well.

I hope it’s mostly just the assumption he would have liked to see her more. Not criticism?

Anthony Bourdain's family was expecting his body to be returned to the U.S. for burial, but instead the French authorities cremated him.

I agree. People in the military don't see their kids for long stretches. I mean, sure, CNN is a sweet gig, but it's a job and it requires a lot of travel. He was a chef and journalist, it's not really a work-from-home kind of thing. Hell, even regular old chefs hold odd hours. It's what you do with the time you have with your kids, not how much. Some fathers can sit in the same house with their kids and be a million miles away.

Completely sort of off topic, I love the boots he bought his daughter. Those were pretty awesome. I hope her feet don't grow too much and she'll be able to get a lot of wear out of those.

The cremation story is odd. Depending on what all happened, an open casket might not have been possible, but maybe his Mom wanted to say goodbye to him. They could have cremated him here. But obviously there's more to that story.

Wow, I just stumbled upon a channel that, in memory of his passing, is showing non-stop episodes of Parts Unknown. In an episode on Argentina, he keeps asking the locals about the fact that almost everybody is in therapy and not ashamed of it. Then he visits a therapist and he tells her about 2 dreams he regularly has. One is that he is in a Victorian hotel and he wants to check out, but he can't because the halls are endless and he can't find the exit. He tells about being on the road 200 days a year and that it's a very lonely existence. That he cannot communicate with people close to him, except for his (then) 8-year-old daughter, but can easily communicate with total strangers. His other dream is that he wants to go home, but he has no idea where his home is.
He also mentioned a quote by George Orwell, that humans are merely tubes that you shove food into. He then explains he travels 200 days a year, that people (his crew) set up their cameras and film him shoving food into his mouth.
Quite amazing, in hindsight, to hear these quotes all in a span of 10 minutes in one single episode.

I, too, thought of Sput right away when I read this news. He was a rock star and he burned brightly until he exploded.

Anthony Bourdain had no drugs in his system at time of death

Anthony Bourdain did not have any narcotics in his system at the time of his death, officials said Friday.

The celebrity chef, author and TV-host hanged himself this month in a hotel room in Kayersberg, France, where he had been filming an episode of his popular CNN show “Parts Unknown.” He was 61.

French prosecutor Christian de Rocquigney de Fayel told the New York Times in a text message that there were no drugs in Bourdain’s system – save for a normal dose of a non-narcotic medicine.

The New York chef was cremated in France and his remains and belongings were sent to his younger brother and only sibling, Christopher, his mother, Gladys Bourdain told the paper.

The family plans to have a small memorial in the future, she said.

Bourdain spoke and wrote about his past drug use frankly, detailing his once prolific use of cocaine, heroin and other drugs in a 2014 episode of “Parts Unknown.”

He bought his first bag of heroin on the Lower East Side in 1980, when he was 24, but kicked the addiction later in the 80s.

Are autopsy reports public information? It always seems off to me when they are reported in the news, is it really anyone's business?

You would think posting autopsy results would violate HIPPA but when your dead I guess it doesn’t matter? But I think autopsy reports may fall under public domain but I am not 100% certain.

the autopsy was performed in france so HIPAA doesn't apply. i'm surprised the french were so willing to publish the information though, they have pretty strict privacy rules in general.

And had they found drugs in his system, so what? He's still gone, it isn't going to change the outcome, it would have just given people something to put the blame on to make them feel better...RIP
