Default Charlize sets record straight about Halle Berry comment

CHARLIZE THERON is attempting to reach out to HALLE BERRY in a bid to assure her fellow Oscar winner she didn't make insulting comments about her, despite reports to the contrary.

Theron, who scooped her Best Actress Academy Award two years after Berry's 2002 win, was horrified when she read a quote attributed to her, in which she said, "Note to self. Do not become Halle Berry" - in reference to the movie choices the MONSTER'S BALL has made since her Oscar win.

Theron insists she would never say such a thing about a peer, but her attempts to contact Berry have fallen on deaf ears.

South African beauty Theron says, "That was a comment the writer made, and he said that I'd said it. That's not my style. I don't like that kind of cattiness. Women shouldn't go against women.

"I tried to make contact with her. I sent her flowers saying, `I really want you to know I never said that,' and she never called back.

"I think Halle Berry is an incredible actress. I have no problem with the choices she's made. And she seems to be fine. She doesn't seem to be hiding under the floorboards. At the end of the day, we have to take responsibility for the choices we make.

"If it doesn't work, at least I took the power in that situation. I'm sure Halle has done the same."

Well, it wouldn't surprise me if Charlize had said this. Halle has made some unfortunate role choices since getting the Oscar.

Try not to be so apologetic all the time.

A (gay) friend of mine has a saying when straight people
ask him about relationships and "doing the right thing"
and being honest: when they go on and on and tie
themselves in knots, he says, "what does it ALL MAAAAAAATTER!?"
    (insert eye-roll here).

So a writer or an editor puts a joke in the article that
makes Charlize look conceited. What does it ALL MATTER?

(Besides, White South Africans are very, very worried that the
    rest of the world still sees them with the bullwhip, beating blacks;
Charlize is desperately worried that Halle thinks she's a racist.
Halle, on the other hand, ought to be worried that we think
she's an idiot for making "Catwoman" in that ludicrous outfit.)

^ That's exactly what I thought: That Charlize, being South African, was afraid of sounding racist. I hate to say this, but I'm sure Charlize is a bit racist. It was an ingrained part of her upbringing.

I still like Charlize b/c she's talented, but she shouldn't be so apologetic and sensitive about the comment--whether or not she actually said it.

I come from s.a and find your comments insulting.
    "ingrained part of her upbringing"
Not all south africans are like their stereotypes. She is hardly a racist. I didnt even THINK of racism when i read the story, i sincerely only thought she was worried she might be offended about the comment on her career move.

^ Hey, that's just my opinion...reasonable minds can differ.

It's just that there are so many racists in this country--one that's supposedly founded on being the so-called melting pot theory and that "all men are created equal," yada-yada.

I've also met people from the U.S. South who told me they grew up referring to blacks as n***ers, and that they never considered that racist b.c that's how they grew up.

Anything I write on this forum is my opinion...what do you care what I think anyway?

Because you're spreading the word that south africans are racist. I find that offensive. No mean to start a fight. Merely stating. Its unfair. Opinions can differ, not facts.

^ I'm missing something...I don't recall ever saying South Africans are racist.

I just don't read that much into the postings of a disembodied e-voice, but hey...to each their own.

That's true; I've known many South Africans and not all of them were racist. Some were shockingly racist, but others weren't racist at all.

Actual racism is nowhere near as prevalent as the accusations of it. The problem isn't that there are a ton of racists, it's that there are a ton of people who ACCUSE others of being racist if they so much as make a negative comment (which has nothing to do with skin color) about someone of a different race.

It's easy to see that Charlize's comment was not racially motivated at all and it's unfortunate that she has to worry about people perceiving it as such.

This thread is awesome for comic relief.

Forgot to mention: If someone accuses me of being racist, I wouldn't get up in arms about it. *yawn*

The comment isn't racist - regardless of who did or did not say it.
He who knows does not speak.
He who speaks does not know.

^ Exactly. But some people on this forum want to censor your thoughts so you can't even opine what you thought Theron's motivation for making the comment might have been, which is something we do here every day.

If you think her comment had no race implications (as I think may have been the case in my first posting), that's cool. If you think her comment might have some underlying subconscious race implications, also cool. Who the f*ck cares? We're all entitled to an opinion, one way or another. Geez.

Damn, it takes a very twisted mind to find any racist motivations in Charlize's words.
