Some are nice on and off screen, but many are not.

I wonder if Jim Carrey's like that too.

I always got the impression that Robin Williams would just glare at people when the camera is off.

Actually, they were both pretty nice back when I was interviewing them. Carrey was very high strung -- he always bummed Cdn. cigs from the Cdn. journalists -- but down to earth. Williams was very funny and approachable. He's in Van a lot and hangs out at comedy clubs and restaurants. He's a big tipper, and well liked.

Hmmm that's good, I love Robin Williams. It just seems it's usually the ones who are really happy, fun and go-lucky in front of people who tend to be kind of dark and quiet alone or when they're "off".

Comedians are often very dark people. Carrey has bouts with manic depression. Williams is one of the few well-adjusted comics I've ever met. Most are the exact opposite off stage than they are on in my experience.

I have a friend in the States who interviews a lot of comics, and she says this, too.

It kind of makes sense though doesn't it? I mean they're living carictures, and most of their jokes are very cynical.

They're describing the human condition, which it isn't always pretty or nice. Many are extremely sensitive and the only way they can cope with reality is to laugh at it.
