Actually, Sola, I disagree with calling internet gossip a form of collective sadism. Not until it gets nasty, mob-handed and is focussed on a single poster (which does happen, obviously). But that's simply bullying and it's just plain wrong. Generally I think it's just like the old village (or global village in this case) neighbours-across-the-fence tradition of speculating about anything interesting and different about everybody else. In most cases, unless the object is in earshot, it's harmless - so I'm sorry you chose to hear it. But what's that saying about eavesdroppers never hearing good of themselves? That's not a rebuke, btw.

The board also seems to have lost its good humour this morning. Come on, people, jolly up. Gossip is supposed to be fun.
