Well, I dated the guys but could not shake the feeling that they were really gay. I told them as much. I accepted them as straight because they told me they were but they were just too "sweet" and kept setting off my gaydar. They both see men exclusively now.

Noooo!! Only the ones who might be good role models!! Al would be an embarrassment to us all if he came out!*unless it was part of some heinously vulgar and obscene drama that would crush Star..then it would be ok)

Perhaps I'm naive, but I totally don't get the problem with a " black gay man" coming out. What does the color of ones skin have to do with how someone reacts to the fact they're gay? White gays have it as bad as black gays, etc., don't they?
I'm sure the backlash is not walk in the park for anybody, regardless of race or gender.

Well he doesn't care that they outed him... he's dead. And it's not a bad thing, IMO.... it's another black gay role model for young, gay, black men to have... but it can also serve as a warning... don't let your life pass you by, living a lie, being miserable, because you're afraid of what people think.

White gays do not have to face the double discrimination. Blacks have to face racism in the gay community and homophobia in the black community. It is worse for most gay black men.

Well, I could kinda tell he was gay in the first place, but why does this matter? Sounds to me like someone's looking to make some money....
Possibly it's a cultural thing-- maybe his secrecy was b/c homosexuality is viewed much differently in the black community. Whatever the case, Luther was a remarkable talent and he will really be missed.

Luther didn't come out of the closet, for the same reason any other black male celeb can't come out: female fans... His fan base consisted of females. Women buy cds from these crooners, because they not only love the music, but they fantasize about "what if he was with me?"... If Luther or anyone else comes out of the closet, then he'll lose a lot of that fan base...
I'm sure he would have loved to come out, but I'm also sure he loves his money too... God bless him. R.I.P.

Well put-thats the bottom line right there- and why most celebs of *any* color don't come out.
ITA its harder for black men to come out because of the extreme homophobia in their community (not that it doesn't exist everywhere else too)

The public knew Vandross was gay its not exactly a secret. Vandross was like Jodie Foster his homosexuality was an open secret. Unlike Foster he had to deal with the homophobiia of the black American community. I feel Vandross life was a TRAGEDY. Here is this amazing man singing for
black people that DON'T RESPECT HIM because he's gay yet he sings for them. The black American community had this Don't ask don't tell approach with Luther. As long as Luther remained in the closet he made his money. And Luther was super rich. However, AT WHAT PRICE. I think therre is a lesson here. Is MONEY EVERYTHING? I mean the man couldn't really be free and be himself it was like he had a gun at the back of his head worrying that someone would out him or whatever. If Luther had the strength maybe he could of come out. But Luther needed blacks because they are his bread and butter. They are his biggest market. The black Americans buy his CDs, DVD,s go to his concerts ect. It seemed Luther tried so HARD to gain the respect of the black American community and THEY did not RESPECT THE MAN.
And I feel that is very very sad. I think the truth should come out. BEcause it really shows the hypocrisy of the black American community here. They like Luther as LONG as he DENIED in public WHO HE REALLY WAS. And I think that's just deplorable. I think he should of come out. Just my opinion.
