A lot of male actors have male...ahem, "mentors"...early in their careers, and I'm not surprised about Clark Gable hving done the same! Not that I haven't heard it before...
Same goes for Warren Beatty, Clint Eastwood, James Dean, John Wayne, and quite a few others, from what I've heard...

I don't know, Alice - from what I can gather, Jimmy Dean was a bit like Marlon Brando. Anyone possessing a pulse was on his "preferred" list!

I read a rather controversial biography about Marlon recently called Brando Unzipped. If what is in this book is to be believed, Marlon basically spent his whole adult life having sex with anyone who stood still long enough for Marlon to catch - including, apparently, James Dean, who he had a fling with, on and off, for a couple of years.
Apparently, Brando never knew quite how to feel about James, and always ran hot and cold on him, but was totally devastated when Jimmy died.
Brando Unzipped is certainly an interesting read!

Yep, beautiful, young Warren had tons of older, homosexual mentors when
he first started out. Recently, Jane Fonda even said she always thought he
was gay because he knew so many gay people. But: I guess Warren was
sort of a tease. He never did anything but be a platonic friend, a student
absorbing the knowledge of the older gay men he was friends with.
Playwright William Inge had a crush on Warren, but was also very ashamed
about his own homosexuality. He'd rather live as a single than give in to his
gay urges. He was an important mentor early in Beatty's career, casting him
in "A Loss of Roses" on stage and (re-) writing the Bud part in "Splendor In
The Grass" to have more in common with Warren, after finding out more
about Beatty's family and character.
Tennessee Williams once said about Beatty (at the time of filming "The
Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone" with Vivien Leigh):
"He is so beautiful, just looking at him brings tears to my eyes.
What a waste."
Tennessee Williams, an avowed homosexual,
about the then 24 year old Warren Beatty.

HWBL, you are extremely knowledegable! That was an awesome post! I'm not a massive Warren fan myself, but you certainly make him sound most interesting! And I do love Splendor in the Grass...wonderful film!
Didn't William Inge have a bit of a crush on Paul Newman, too?

Thank you, you're welcome. Well, I'm only knowledgeable about 2 celebs:
Warren and Elvis - know close to diddly-squat about others
I don't know about him having a crush on Newman, but it wouldn't
surprise me.
What I do know about Inge is what his niece (who also served as his
secretary from time to time) told biographers: Inge was really, really
ashamed of his homosexuality and so did not act upon it, physically.
To drown his shame, he surrendered to alcohol and indeed became
a (functioning) alcoholic.
In the end, though, the mental burden became too much for him and
began to interfere with his ability to work -as well as the quality of
his work. Finally, he convinced himself after a few failed plays/stories
that he was no longer able to produce good work and fell into his last
deep depression, committing suicide in 1973.

Actually, according to a new book that I hear is coming out late this year, Carole Lombard was Gable's "beard". According, to this book, he was really in love with another woman, but had the affair become public, it would have destroyed his career.

This the same mysterious "new book" you were referring to before? You don't mention the name of it in either post.

My God, really? I thought that Clark really did love Carole, despite his previous sluttiness! Didn't his last wife put him in the ground next to Lombard, because that was where Gable was going to be happiest at rest, next to Carole?

He left Scarlett. That was proof enough.

Okay, with all this "casting couch" stuff, who were these supposed predatory homosexual casting agents? I've never heard of any named explicitly.
Also, I've heard that certain high-ranking executives (like Jack Warner) conducted casting-couch operations themselves with young actresses because the studios signed contracts directly with the actors/actresses themselves. I'm trying to figure where an individual casting agent actually comes into play during the days of actors like Gable....
