No one ever actually came out (ha) and asked him straight (ha) out the question. So they allowed him to dance around it.
Even though Rolling Stone sucks and has lost all credibility since putting Disney stars on the cover, it's pretty cool to get the cover when all you've done is sing karaoke on TV. The winner didn't even get the cover. (because he's straight and has nothing raunchy to confess.)
