Clark Gable had affairs with men
Quote:
Clark Gable was secretly bisexual, according to a new biography.
David Bret's book Clark Gable: Tormented Star claims the legendary womaniser had relationships with openly gay men and was "gay for pay" in his early career.
It adds that, as a child, Gable was branded a "sissy" by his father, which prompted him to adopt a macho image and denounce homosexuality.
The five-times-married star died in 1960 at the age of 59.

I think that was more common than we think in "old Hollywood" with its legendary casting couches.

Probably a better question would be which Hollywood actor (male or female) is 100 per cent heterosexual. That would likely be a short list.

I heard this before too.
I think Clark allowed it to happen, as do many others, in order to help his career. It doesn't mean he was gay, not at all.

I don't believe this. Gable might have had a casting couch experience, but that doesn't make him gay. I've read many old hollywood books and all the main gable's bio ( even the less honoring ones ) but truly, gable doesn't once comes through as a homo

I read that he was a total prick and got George Cukor fired from Gone with the wind because Cukor knew about Gable's experiences with men in the beginning of his career. Also that he had been involved in a hit and run that was then covered up but that might have been some other guy.

the hit and run thing is clarified by Lyn Tornabene in her detailed gable's bio,Long Live the King. Gable was mildly drunk,as he practically always was after 6pm in the post war years,he was driving his jaguar and could not drive all right,he saw a car coming towards him and was aware he would have crashed into the other car as drunk as he was so, he turned and hit a tree. He had a small wound to his temple. After that he called his agent and MGM power man Howard Strickling who advised a man who then worked for MGM private police, they picked up clark and quickly took care of the car. There was no other person involved but it was a great concern nevertheless cause also driving drunk was considered very scandalous
the cukor thing is real in part,he was a bitch to cukor but mainly because he considered Cukor a 'women's director'. In his very masculine ways ,so to say, gable feared the part of Rhett would result very minor in comparison with scarlett's and melanie's roles, most especially in Cukor's hands,so he asked producer david o selznick two things, enough money to divorce his then wife ria and marry carole lombard and a man's man director, that's why fleming was chosen. He was one of gable's closest friend,a very hard man who directed the set like an army, that was just gable's cup of tea.....there would be many psychologiacal reason to that but since i feel i'm getting a little too long here,i will stop

I thought this was pretty much common knowledge? If he wasn't gay, he certainly advanced his career on the casting couch. Ditto Cary Grant.
