Of course he waited till a Friday afternoon to let this be known even though Perez Hilton has been saying it for a while; he's hoping it'll all 'calm' down a bit over the weekend

Neil Patrick Harris is gay – and wants to quell recent reports that he had denied it. The actor tells PEOPLE exclusively:

"The public eye has always been kind to me, and until recently I have been able to live a pretty normal life. Now it seems there is speculation and interest in my private life and relationships.

"So, rather than ignore those who choose to publish their opinions without actually talking to me, I am happy to dispel any rumors or misconceptions and am quite proud to say that I am a very content gay man living my life to the fullest and feel most fortunate to be working with wonderful people in the business I love."

Harris, 33, currently stars in the CBS comedy How I Met Your Mother. He shot to fame in 1989 at age 16 when he played a teen-prodigy doctor on the hit Doogie Howser, M.D. "It was a very fast but wonderful education," he told PEOPLE in 1998.

After the show went off the air in 1993, he shook off his teen image with roles in the musicals Rent and Assassins and a wild turn as an unhinged version himself in the 2004 movie Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle.

"I'm enjoying my 30s," he told PEOPLE in 2004. "I feel like I know where I'm going. And I like where I'm going."

Yippee skippee. I think coming out is better than staying in, but the fact that Perez is going around "outing" people who might not want to be outed, and taking all the glory of it, makes me sick to my stomach. Perez is a dick.

And by "not want to be outed," I mean not publicly. There is such a thing as keeping your private life private to the people close to you, and I think a lot of gay men/women prefer to do that. They should not feel forced to make some stupid statement. That bothers me.

LOS ANGELES -- Neil Patrick Harris is gay and wants to quell any rumors to the contrary. "(I) am quite proud to say that I am a very content gay man living my life to the fullest," Harris tells People magazine's Web site.

The 33-year-old actor said he was motivated to disclose his sexuality because of recent "speculation and interest in my private life and relationships."

Harris stars on the CBS comedy "How I Met Your Mother." He started on TV as a teen, playing the namesake doctor on the series "Doogie Howser, M.D."

Good for him. I'm surprised a little I suppose. It just seems like people are coming out alot more now than ever. Its sad that they have to say "I'm gay", when we dont have to say 'I'm hetero', and I dont think I've heard anyone say, 'Hey, I'm Bi'.

I disagree Perezhilton is just doing his job. Everyone is NYC knows Neil is gay its no secret. Perez is doing his job he's a gossip journalist his website is not the LA TIMES. Celebs have far more serious issues then this so I can't see why this outing gay stars is a no no. Look at that Evangelicl bigot Haggard. That man had paid a gay hooker for sex and got a masage and got crystal meth from him. The gay hooker outed the guy because he was huring the gay community. Neil came out I believe because in his heart he knows coming out he's helping a lot of gay people out there.
I have relatives in my family that are gay and if they had role models when they were younger maybe coming out for them would of been easier.

isn't the one that actually outed Neil Patrick Harris. There is a website called Canada.com and the entertainment editor John Kennedy he was the one that outed Neil. Because Kennedy said that Harris had his current lover David Burtka on an episode of HIMYM. Perez caught on to the story when Neil's publicist said "he's not of that persuasion." And Perez went and did his angle of the story. If we are living in a more ppen society and we are talking about celebrites outing stars is part of the game. If a a closeted gay star doesn't want anyone to know he or she is gay then don't become famous. People talk about celebrites doing drugs, or raping people or even killing people yet coming out is suddenly off limits? Why is that? Its hypocrisy I believe and also a level of homophobia and prejudice as well. If you are a celebrity in the public domain your life is fair game.
