Default Tabloids and 'outing'

I found this here http://www.reviewpreview.com/webbbs/...g.pl/read/9871, part of Billy Masters/Filth2Go website.

I used to think that if certain stars were really gay, there'd be some photographic evidence floating around as proof. But I've also believed that the magazines print what they are told to print; that everything we see and read is set up by a stars publicist, etc. So I found this bit of information interesting...

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Having worked with tabloid or two I can tell you outright that just because the goods are out there doens't mean they are going to out you. Their readership really doesn't want to read a buch of outings and they know it. Their biggest readers ARE Clay's fanbase so we were all quite shocked when they decided to finally run something on him. Granted, they ran it in the wayback of the magazine. Tabloids know their bread and butter and aren't going to upset it. A constant barrage of gay outings is not what they want their focus to be. Quite the opposite. They are not above 'innings' either.

Case in point, this weeks' Enquirer sets about to IN Jesse Metcalph by reporting on his wild, several hours long sex romp. Uh...huh. If you believe that then you will also believe that Matt LeBlanc got way too friendly with a female stripper and is now ashamed of his behaivior. lol.) Clearly they know the truth. So why print it? Because their readership would much rather enjoy the fantasy of Jesse being straight than hearing about his gay lifestyle. Period. These outfits do not shit where they eat.

I don't find it surprising at all.

Tabloids are also not going to "out" anyone because 1) their source of information is not the greatest (I think we can all admit tabloids are mostly bullshit that are just for entertainment purposes) and 2) they could get sued to oblivion if they tried to "out" a celebrity with false information -- even if their information is correct they could get sued for potentially "hurting" the said-actors/actresses career. It's a lose lose situation so of course they're not going to do it! It's not that important to them. They could not care less about giving their customers real information -- they just want your $$$ and they'll print whatever simple bs they can come up with.

That's one of the reasons why I don't understand people who trust tabloids. That's almost an oxymoron to me. I mean I love them, they're really fun, but to act like they're the source of all "true" information when it comes to the "dirt" in celebrities lives, come on! The only people who really know the dirt are the people working with the celebrities or in that environment -- not the ones printing the crap.

I just think it's all contrived, whether it's "inning" or "outing."

^I believe that too. I've always believed a star knew about the story before it broke; so theres really no such thing as bad publicity.

Its the old saying, 'Doesn't matter what they're saying about you, just be grateful they're talking about you at all'.

That's how I look at it. I don't disbelieve or believe anything because either could be true—the article or the opposite. I don't know the person that's being written about so of course I have no idea what is true. I think that's sort of gossip columnists saving grace—they know the people reading these have probably never even met the said celebrity, so they can basically feed you any type of bs that they want, and in the end, they can just say, "oh it's only gossip don't believe what you read!" Like Ted has said in the past. So either way, for them, it's a win win situation, and they really don't give a damn about their readers getting the truth. The truth is rarely stranger than fiction.

Okay, I admit about a month I bought an Enquirer or Star! It had a who's gay in Hollywood on the front. I couldn't resist. All the usual suspects but thing that caught my EYE was the Clay thing they had printed. Apparently last year they had said he was gay and said some guy had an affair with him in a hotel. Too my surprise, the magazine said ,that now, they don't believe the guy who said that he had an affair with Clay. I was kind of shocked because I'd had heard the rumor all over my local radio station. They said, the jury was still out on Aiken.
Well, I thought to myself. You've already destroyed this guys character, how can you now run a BLURB, in a story about "who's gay in hollywood story" and now, after a year say , you don't believe Aiken is gay. Geez, he will never be believed. Even I who read the story and hearing so many things on the radio, think, I heard the story so much, it must be true???? Anyway, there is NO way to get the gay off him now. Once you've been labeled, YOUR LABELED!

then the week after that on the I picked one up going thru the line and read that Aiken was having a love child with a girl he went to high school with. I just laughed and put it back. I'm starting to think they just make it up as they go. Once in a while the do stumble on to something that is true.

Well just the is he/she gay or not guessing just brings in tons of money. It's like a game in a way. Titalation sells. It keeps people wanting more so why just tell them the truth. Truth is not as juicy.

I think that's why the internet is the new media. The internet has taken over in celebrity gossip. People don't have to wait for next week's Us Weekly, Star, or National Enquirer. People just have to click on the internet and they can get instant gossip. And in relation to outing stars its true tabloids I think actually AREN'T into that. They like to maintain the fantasy. Matt Leblanc according to my sources is gay and so is Jake Gyllenhaal. Yet the tabloids insist on printing they are straight. The new media the internet is gaining ground and its so powerful now they are getting the celebrity gossip faster to the public.

I'm actually suspicious when someone has to say they're straight. I'm pretty convinced matt leblanc is gay but when i was watching the friends true hollywood story, they didn't mention david schwimmer or matthew perry's girlfriends, or the 3 girls' boyfriends, but with matt leblanc they went on about his first girlfriend.. i just found it funny.

And i agree with you; i dont even buy magazines anymore, but i dont miss it, you read it once, its full of shit, and then you throw it away or it hangs around your house for ages. Thank god for the internet.

The internet has changed everying in terms of celebrity gossip. The public has an insatiable hunger for gossip. We can't wait for next week's US Weekly and the internet you can get away with a lot more then a regular tabloid publication Sometimes the internet is more powerful then mainstream media. Perezhilton got Neil Patrick Harris and Lance Bass to come out of the closet. Now that would never happen 15 years ago. But now with the internet stories can be posted in a second. And Hollywood publicists don't have the control they once had to be able to theaten people. In the past publicists would say to a magazine if they wrote a negative article they won't allow their client to talk to that publication. But on the internet bloggers don't give a fuck about publicists and the control is gone. I think the internet is amazing it gives the power back to the people. Because the tabloids are a business and their job is to sell magazines. With the internet people can by pass all the magazine BS and get the truth.
