Re: Oprah Winfrey says: "Gayle and I are not gay"
Yeah, wasn't it by her father? That's what I heard... I think.

No, it was her uncle. She is very close to her father.

Re: Oprah Winfrey says: "Gayle and I are not gay"
For *me*, it would irritate the hell outa me that anytime I spent w/my best friend it was tittered about and that people though we were having sex when we were in fact shopping. I would also feel that it disrespected my long term relationship w/ my SO. I personally would want the record set *straight* so to speak and it has nothing to do with being homophobic.

I understand what you are saying and I agree in your situation, but in oprah's case it's different, all that needed to be said is, "no we are not intimate with each other, dating, etc. etc." Period. There's no need to take it a step further and practically scream that you are not gay, but that there is nothing "wrong" with it.
It's one thing to say you are not cheating on your partner, another to say that you are not gay. A hollywood celebrity is more likely to raise a big fuss over being perceived gay than being perceived as cheating on his/her significant other/mate.
I'm sorry to sound so passionate about this subject, and I have nothing against you, but it's a personal issue with me, and I do believe homosexuality is still one of the most "acceptable" forms of bigotry allowed the world over. That's why I hate it when stars show their hypocrisy in saying things without realizing what they are saying.

Re: Oprah Winfrey says: "Gayle and I are not gay"
And I hear you, but I do not agree. By accusing her and Gayle to be lesbians they are in fact accusing her of cheating on her partner, Stedman as well. I mean she couldn't even give her best friend hug in public without the "THEY'RE LESBIANS" headlines. It's ridiculous.
And FWIW, I never heard her scream. I would want the record set straight as well. All I'm saying is that I don't blame her. JMO.
And I agree with you that there is MUCHO homophobia in the world, my 18 male cousin just came out to his ULTRA close minded parents and they are "just sick" over it. But of course it is a "choice" so he needs to just straighten up.

Re: Oprah Winfrey says: "Gayle and I are not gay"
Well you know some people might feel like personally, homosexuality is against their own beliefs, so when they are accused of being gay, they want to set things straight. As long as you accept that homosexuality may be someone else's path in life, I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting people to know that you are not gay. I wouldn't want people to think I'm a lesbian because personally I don't agree with it, and it's not who I am, but I'm not going to give someone else grief over it if they're gay. So why should there be a problem as long as I am tolerant of others?
Another issue is that this whole thing may imply to some people that you can't be close friends with someone of the same sex without being homosexual. I think it's important for people to know that this is not always the case, and the publicity from Oprah's statement may help someone who is dealing with the same doubts.

I think Oprah and Stedman have a strange relationship. How can she be with a man for over 20 years and not marry him? I know she's super rich she could always have a pre nup. It seems to me they have a contract or some kind of an agreement or something? I heard a rumour that Stedman has had a child with some other woman while with Oprah. Perhaps Stedman is just a stand in boyfriend something to make the public think she has a man. I wouldn't be surprised if she and gail are lesbians.

Well I know lots of older people who have been together, living together, have kids, etc...for 30+ years. If I didn't know better I'd think they're married, but they're not; its more of a common-law kind of thing..

I watched Oprah last night and she had Jennifer Aniston on the show, and the conversation went like this;
Oprah: I was on a weekend getaway with Jen, and I came into the room and all her friends were in the bed with her. I'm like, 'Ohhhhkay'.
Jennifer: We went back to our own rooms though.
I was like, come on Oprah, isn't it you who lets gayle sleep on the end of you and stedmans bed!

It's called a de facto relationship. Not everyone has to or wants to take the march down the aisle!

I'll second that. Marriage is not the be all and end all of life, relationships, etc. My inlaws lived together for 30 years before marrying on a lark in Paris. It seems to have made not one iota of difference either way.
