'My father liked being called gay,' admits Cary Grant's daughter in new memoir

Cary Grant's daughter has penned a memoir about the famous actor, admitting he liked it when people called him gay.
The British screen icon, who was married five times, was often dogged by rumours that he was bisexual.
But his daughter Jennifer Grant, 45, says the Hot Saturday star actually liked the mystique surrounding his sexuality because it 'made women want to prove the assertion wrong'.
Rumours: Cary Grant, pictured with fellow actor Randolph Scott, who he was rumoured to have had a gay affair
In the memoir, Good Stuff: A Reminiscence of My Father, Cary Grant, Jennifer writes: '(You) Can't blame men for wanting him, and wouldn't be surprised if Dad even mildly flirted back.
'When the question arises, it generally speaks more about the person asking.'
But she adds: 'Dad somewhat enjoyed being called gay. He said it made women want to prove the assertion wrong.'
Grant was notoriously private about his personal life.
In the Thirties, rumours swirled about his close friendship with fellow actor Randolph Scott, who he met on the set of the 1932 film Hot Saturday.
Shortly afterwards they moved into a Malibu beach house together, which became known as Bachelor Hall.

Recollections: His daughter Jennifer writes in a new memoir that her father liked being called gay because it 'made women want to prove the assertion wrong'
In his book, Cary Grant: Grant's Secret Sixth Marriage published in 2004, Marc Eliot claimed Grant had a sexual relationship with Scott.
Jennifer was born to Grant's fourth wife, Dyan Cannon, who he eloped with in 1965 to Las Vegas.
Their marriage was short lived and ended in divorce two years later after she left him.
Cannon, an American television actress and screenwriter, claimed that he flew into frequent rages and spanked her when she disobeyed him.
In her memoir, Jennifer admits she had a bit of a crush on her father.
'Okay, I had a crush on Dad. Okay, more than a little crush on Dad.
'My other real crushes were Donny Osmond and Jean-Paul Belmondo.'
Of her parents' relationship, she said: 'Something in me has always felt that my parents came together to make me. Vanity? Perhaps.'
She added that ultimately the pair were too headstrong to stay together, but said they loved each other dearly.
The memoir will be published by Alfred A. Knopf on May 3.

The article that I posted says that they did - however, you have to consider that when Grant was alive it was illegal to be homosexual and there were BIG legal penalties - not just fines, but jail time & hard labour, if you were convicted.
He would've lost his career, everything else.
Also - who is going to have a sexual relationship in front of their kid? She was 2 where her parents divorced, its not like she saw him shagging his BF, since he probably lived somewhere else when she was old enough to remember.
She isn't denying or proving the rumours, only saying that he liked them.
Bitter...

This historical observation just came in from regular reader Gregory Moore:
"It's happened to me more than once: While conversing with a straight person, Cary Grant's name will come up and the topic of whether or not he was gay arises.
"It seems that straight people -- especially straight women -- will bristle and become very sexually territorial about him. Sort of like, 'No, you can't have him! He's ours!'
"I can't think of any other star whose nebulous sexuality gives rise to such a tug-of-war between the hets and the homos.
"For me, the answer lies in the following photos I've collected over the years of Grant with Randolph Scott. Grant's 'friendship' with the devastatingly handsome Scott was remarkably open and fairly candid in the dangerously oppressed 1930s.
"There were several photo shoots for the fan magazines of the two 'merry bachelors,' who for several years shared a beach house in Santa Monica, as well as a mansion in the Los Feliz area of Los Angeles, which was commonly referred to in the press as 'Bachelor Hall,' both before, during, and after their various marriages to women (they had seven marriages between them).
"These photos are just a few of the many I've found, and I find it so perfectly clear that they were much more than just 'roommates.' It's obvious that they shared a great love and were just about the most physically gorgeous couple in Hollywood history."

Right, a man as gorgeous and famous as Cary Grant needed an angle to lure women, so he pretended to be gay so some stalker fans could try to "cure" him. That's a great ruse, no wonder he shacked up with another actor for years if he managed to pull hot babes like Barbara Hutton and that other old bag he was married to.But she adds: 'Dad somewhat enjoyed being called gay. He said it made women want to prove the assertion wrong.'
ETA: I don't know who I was thinking of, but he wasn't married to an old bag. Just a rich younger one.
I was thinking of Clark Gable. Another one dogged by bisexual rumours.

I think that many of these actors were gay or bi-sexual just as they are today, but whereas today the impact of them coming out would only be financial, when these actors were active the penalties would have included jail time & hard labour.
Its sad that some people are still so bigoted (but unsurprising I guess).

Cary was quite handsome, but his BF Randolph was plain and skinny.
Yeah, Cary Grant was just so incredibly good-looking that he did not need any help in getting women. Especially if it came to him embracing doubts about his sexuality.
I didn't believe it at first, but after seeing those pictures and learning that he lived with another man for years (which, he was rich, he didn't need a roommate) I believe the rumors.
ETA: It will take some convincing to believe Clark Gable was gay, though. All my Old Hollywood crushes are getting stepped on lately.
Keep your stupid comments in your pocket!
Oh give me a break. He moved in with his lover into their own house. Everything about them screams gay. Gay as the day is long.
I am from the American CIA and I have a radio in my head. I am going to kill you.
Gable was straight, but when he was a poor, struggling actor in California, he was "rough trade". That's allegedly where gay director George Cukor met him, on some pier in Santa Monica. That is why he got Cukor fired from Gone With the Wind supposedly.
ETA: This wiki entry of Cukor's bio suggests otherwise, however.
