SHe didn't necessarily have to lose a ton of weight to play a cancer patient. They can do amazing things with make-up to make someone look gaunt and ill. I guess it wouldn't be "real" enough or show what lengths she's willing to go to in order to give an "honest" performance. I'm all for actors and actresses taking on a new look for a role, but I think some of the body-morphing that goes on can be be really damaging in the long run.

I think it's mostly an unfortunate camera angle is the first picture. It's hard to look at the two comparison pics because she's posed SO differently. She was very thin when she won her Oscar. Still, she does look unhealthy, part of that could be due to her horrid makeup.
