^^Hunterdon is getting that way too from what I hear. My family now lives in Morris and Somerset Counties in and around the snooty areas. They just keep to themselves. The snootiness can be over the top. And I swear there is an affected accent that goes with it!

Yet I grew up 57 miles outside of Manhattan but had to take two different train lines to get onto the island. That could easily take two hours. Exurban life was a pain at times.

Many parts of Monmouth County are considered ritzy as well. NJ gets such a bum wrap but it's actually home to some of the most breathtaking scenery in the country and a sizeable number of the country's richest people. It's a state with a bit of everything!

CZB, what is your NJ connection?
i agree that many parts of monmouth county are ritzy, but to me they are party of the sprawling suburbs of nj. they don't feel like ny suburbs in westchester, for example. there are plenty of mcmansions in rumson and deal as well as old victorians. but it's still a long commute to ny, albeit on a direct train as you cite. don't get me wrong, i completely agree with you about nj's bad press which is mainly based on tourists' impressions of what they see when the leave newark airport.

i grew up on the jersey shore.

I really like Montclair in that area, it's a little more funky than the rest of the towns.

There are still a lot of wasp-y towns in NJ. Somerset county is full of them. Preppies everywhere.
agree about the wasp-y towns but i am more familiar with monmouth & ocean counties. to me red bank is funky, well, for nj, but haven't spent too much time in montclair.

Joe Piscopo and The Sopranos have not helped the state's image either.

I'm not terribly familiar with the shore towns. We did a lot of day trips to the shore (places like Long Beach Island, Belmar and Manasquan (sp?)) in the summer when I was a kid but I don't think I've been back down there since I was 15. I'm not a beach person.

I like Red Bank-that's really close to my mother, Montclair is the same it's just a bit bigger.

All of God's children are not beautiful. Most of God's children are, in fact, barely presentable.

She always has a nasty, greasy shine on her face...

    Anyways, this lady is kooky!
