Looks like he lost of his muscle from Magic Mike way too fast. There's a proper way to bulk down and return to a normal weight without looking like Death slapped you in the face. He doesn't look healthy at all.

Matthew McConaughey Explains Gaunt Appearance

The reason, according to the 42-year-old newlywed, has nothing to do with vanity. McConaughey will soon play an HIV positive patient in The Dallas Buyer's Club, costarring two-time Academy Award winner Hilary Swank, 38.

"I'm playing a guy who was sick and would have loved to have been healthier but wasn't. For me, it's more of a mental thing than a physical thing," McConaughey told Us Weekly at the NYLON Guys and Macy's INC party in Santa Monica, Calif. August 15. "I'll get down to the weight I need to get to. I'm on my way, and it's what I need to do for the job."

McConaughey is eating "small amounts" of high-protein, low-carbohydrate foods to slim down. "It's only five ounces," he said. "That's the toughest thing."

As for his workouts, "it's mostly cardio," McConaughey told Us. "There's very, very little resistance." When filming wraps, the Texas native is most excited to chow down on a "cheeseburger."

His movie prep aside, McConaughey is also getting ready for the birth of his third child with wife Camila Alves, whom he married on June 9. (They have two children, Levi, 4, and Vida, 2.)

"The kids understand what's in her belly. Levi's very excited about it and we're looking forward to having a third [child] in the family," the actor said.

To help Alves, 30, during her pregnancy, McConaughey told Us he's "doing a lot of cooking! There's a Brazilian dish that her mother does, so we're having it more often than we're used to. That involves a lot of chicken, a lot of cheese and things like that, which I'm not having, but she is. She loves a good steak, so I've been making a good rib-eye for her when I can."

He looks so old. I assume he's doing this as healthily as is possible, with a dietician etc, but still. It doesn't look good and I can't imagine the long-term damage he's doing to himself.

There's no healthy way to make yourself emaciated, especially in a short period of time. Honestly, I think actors who do this are idiots. Lose and gain a bit for roles, but don't go into unhealthy territory for it.

Who's that gaunt gentleman standing with Camila McConaughey?

Surprise – it's actually her husband, Matthew.

The actor, 42, has become somewhat unrecognizable in recent weeks since losing 30 pounds for his upcoming role in The Dallas Buyer's Club, the true story of a man with AIDS in the mid-1980s who seeks out experimental HIV drugs to prolong his life.

McConaughey looked extremely thin in photos showing him leaving a church in Austin, Texas, as he appeared to be leaning on his mother for support. If he seems as though he's somewhat ill, well, that's part of the point.

"I should not look healthy by the time I'm doing this," McConaughey told Larry King's Ora TV web series Larry King Now back in July, when he had lost 15 of the 30 pounds.

"It's a bit of a spiritual cleanse, mental cleanse," he told King. And while his pregnant wife has been facing pregnancy cravings, "[I'm] drinking a lot of tea … It takes a while for your body to understand that it has to feed off of itself and that you're not going to give it something else from the outside."

For McConaughey, who's expecting his third child with Camila, it was a major reversal from how he prepared to play a buff stripper in Magic Mike. For that role, he ate five meals a day of only protein and worked out relentlessly.

The thread of that Irish actress doing this for a role made me think of MM's. Maybe it's okay, but I can't believe it's very healthy to work out "relentlessly" and eat a shit load of protein and then turn around and starve 30 lbs off yourself.

It's particularly sad when they torture themselves like that and then the movie flops bigtime. But it's a sign of commitment for an actor to do that and he wouldn't be too believable as an AIDS patient with his normal physique.
