    . . . .
do you laugh when they say stuff like that? i wouldn't be able to maintain a straight face.

    No, not really.

And honestly, I've been overweight in my day, so I know what it is to not want to face the fact you're not "curvy" and more "rotund." And I'm not saying every woman that's overweight does this or would even want to do it, but I know why some grasp onto the fact that Marilyn was supposedly a size 16 - it helps cushion reality.

Sizes change from brand to brand. I can go to one mall and try on pants. One store might be a 6, one an 8, and one a 10. I'm not rapidly expanding and shrinking, so I wonder if there really is a set measurement the clothing industry follows anymore.

And hourglasses are difficult to fit. *growls*

In the original post of this thread there's this sentence:

She's conveniently overlooking the 34 years between 1962 - when Marilyn died - and 1996 when she made the statement, and how drastically sizing changed during that time.
I've heard women say it too.

Frequently accompanied by the woman calling herself "curvy" and the implication that I am not as "womanly" because I am slim.

(And I am definitely not ideal celebrity body slim, but at size 4-6 I am slimmer than most)

Whatever size she was, she certainly was a hot piece of tail!

Although didn't she have work done? Or was that only to her face?

I love Marilyn and saw some of her clothes at an exhibition a few years ago. There was a Pucci print dress that seemed roughly a UK size 10, possibly an 8.

I think that's why I liked it too - plus the quote that Marilyn wasn't about fashion but most definately was about the clothes. I find that interesting as a dressmaker/costumer/couturier/whatever...

Some of her clothing is up for auction soon, and I'm looking through the auction booklet. There's a belt that says it is a size 10, and a leotard of hers that is also a size 10. And there's a Pucci blouse that was a size 14, and an orange Pucci blouse worn in one of her famous photos that is a 12, then finally a pink Pucci dress that is a size 10.

Slightly OT- but there are some beautiful photos of her up for sale- I don't know if they are rare or not, but would you all like me to post screenshots of them in another thread?

I think this shows her size ranges pretty well, from skinny (topless shot) to a little chubby (white one-piece bathing suit). I love the shape of her breasts. They make the fake bolt-ons of today look so absurd.

I'm thinking a 5 at her smallest and an 8 at her largest.

I wouldn't mind a linky to the auctuion site? But imo here could be the right place for the screenshots.

I posted them all here, sorry!
Possibly rare photos of Marilyn Monroe up for auction

You should check out the auction book- i had fun looking through it. I think the Marilyn stuff starts on about pg. 100. Once you get past the Edith Head stuff, you're getting close.
