GB sounds like going from one extreme to the other. Not just with the weight, but with what you are physically able to put into your body. That is, until you heal up enough that you'd better have made sparse eating and healthy food choices enough of a daily habit not to gain some or all of it back. Or added a decent amount of exercise.
Most everyone I know who has had a GB gains at least some of it back, even if only 20-30lbs. I know one guy who is still lean and trim. But he was young when he had his surgery, lives a very active lifestyle (sports and outdoor stuff) and works a physical job. Not being able to do certain things because of his weight made him want to live life to the fullest after GB made it possible. He is one of those people who when you look at him you would never, ever believe he used to weigh twice what he does now. I didn't believe it either until he pulled out a picture.

I had GB a little over two months ago and I can somewhat agree with what you're saying. Is it extreme? Absolutely, but for me I needed something extreme. I had type 2 that finally required medication despite eating relatively healthy for a person who was in the low 200s. I have also always worked out and been physically active. I can literally run circles around my 102 pound sister.
A "rebound" of 15-30 pounds is quite normal and something GB patients are generally informed of by their surgeon or nutritionist.
Sometimes extreme measures are warranted. How much have you lost now?

I have 9lb babies, so 8-12 lbs of weight was not possible!
I gained 50lbs with one of my kids, that wasn't due to pigging out. I retained water. A TON of water. You could have poked my leg with a pin and I would have leaked water. My feet were so swollen, I couldn't fit into shoes. I had to go to management at work and ask if I could wear flip flops because they were the only things I could get into. My feet permanently grew a 1/2 size. I had to get all my rings re-sized after. So sometimes, the weight is uncontrollable.

RELIGION: Treat it like it's your genitalia. Don't show it off in public, and don't shove it down your children's throats.
^^^Yeah, my gain was a lot of the same and both my babies were big guys (tiny little things now, though, at least in comparison to their peers)

I gained 50+ pounds, both of my pregnancies, and it was fat. Everything tasted so delicious when I was pregnant, that I just kept right on eating. I would eat an entire box of Little Debbie Oatmeal Cream Pies, in one sitting.
I think that whore Little Debbie, gave me the gift that keeps on giving, because I ended up getting gallstones during my second pregnancy. Gallstones were the best diet ever. I could barely eat, and lost 60lbs, in 5 months.
Thanks for asking! I'm down 46 pounds in just over 8 weeks. I haven't needed a single dose of meds since the morning of surgery. The surgeon puts my diabetes in the "cured" category. In fact, I've had a few issues with hypoglycemia, which they warned me about so I was prepared for it to happen.
I definitely needed the extreme end of this. I'm a confessed carb junk, I love nothing more than a piece of hot, cheesy garlic bread or potatoes of any kind. This surgery took all of that away from me, at least for now, I don't plan on falling back into old habits, but will never say never.
^^^ that's awesome about your diabetes! what an accomplishment.
I do not believe that Nana is saying you should only gain 8-12 when pregnant. I only gained about 12 and had a 8.5 lb baby. I was also heave when I gopt pregnant. I took very good care of myself when pregnant and as the baby gained, I lost fat. A week after delivery I weighed 20lb less than I had before getting pregnant. It was great!
I do see people eat and gain too much because they see pregnancy as their chance to eat as much as they want. The tend to regret it when they are stuck with the extra fat that had nothing to do with the baby.

There is something off-putting about a woman who "tsk's tsk's" others for gaining weight during pregnancy and preaches moderation....all 9 months after having surgical intervention to get her own weight down. And lets not forget the fact that she has a perfect daughter who has managed to do pregnancy and motherhood better than any of the rest of us.
Regarding the only gaining 8-12 lbs when pregnant... if you start off heavy, you may "maintain" your weight for awhile if eating healthy. Some heavier women actually lose weight at first -- they are eating healthy and their metabolism is up. In the end they may only gain a net 10 lbs over their starting weight, but they either have held steady for awhile at first of lost and gained. For example, my niece, who is heavy, lost 15 lbs while pregnant, but ended up 10 lbs over her starting weight. Her net gain was 10, but really, she gained 25 over the course of her pregnancy. Does this make sense?
If you start out at a healthy weight, you will gain 25+ lbs, but if you are heavy and eat healthy, you may maintain or lose before you gain.
