James Brolin and Barbra Streisand have packed on the pounds. Spies say they've turned to Jenny Craig for help shedding the overage.

Barbra Streisand is trying to take inches off her waist — but not off her wallet.

Despite her obese bank account, we hear the diva and her increasingly tubby hubby, James Brolin, have turned to Jenny Craig to shed pounds.

"Oprah hired a personal nutritionist," sniffs a source. "But Barbra wants to save money, so they're getting their meals from a Jenny Craig center."

Streisand has never made a secret of her love for the hearty Italian fare she finds at New York restaurants like Patsy's and Il Mulino. But even her most ardent fans have been shocked by recent photos.

Keeping her company at the trough is her once-hunky soul mate, Brolin. "He's definitely much heavier," says a friend.

Streisand's rep declined to comment. Jenny Craig rep Cozette Phifer says, "We have about 50 to 60 celebrities on the plan now," but wouldn't confirm that Babs is one of them.

Phifer denied that Jenny Craig might dump Kirstie Alley as a spokeswoman in favor of Matt LeBlanc or Britney Spears. But she didn't rule out the company bringing on additional celebs.

The catch: "We wait until they've lost the weight," says Phifer.

Waiting for Babs could take a while.

"I've been eating like a pig," Streisand told Diane Sawyer on "Primetime Live" in September. Asked if she cared about her weight, she said, "I do. I care, but I don't. … I've paid my dues. I can be a little fatter. What's the difference, really?"

Just don't suggest the gym. "I hate exercising," the singer said. "It's just like — it's torture for me."

Stay strong, Barbra. And no buttah!

Maybe opera singers need the extra weight to sustain them through their long-winded arias ... could be that a bit of fat prevents them from getting light-headed and passing out on stage.

Ok. I will say the woman can sing but other than that, I think if she got rid of half the delusions of grandour that are her political thoughts, that outta take off QUITE a few hundred pounds.
