Wearing a dark suit and gold tie, the usually immaculate singer left his shirt hanging loose - a tactic used by men everywhere to disguise a protruding pot belly.
Even the beginnings of a goatee beard could not disguise his jowly neckline and padded face.
Ironically, Bono was in Paris on business - having arranged a conference with French President Nicolas Sarkozy to discuss Third World aid improvement and poverty issues.
"Bono has always been pretty rakish and chiselled," said an onlooker. "But when he arrived at the press conference it was immediately clear he had put on a few pounds.
"He may have had two Christmas number ones about feeding the world but it looks like Bono was the best fed person over the festive period."
The Irish star, who was instrumental in the 1984 and 2004 Band Aid tracks which helped raise millions of pounds for African causes, is a global campaigner for the underprivileged.
He has also been instrumental in the Drop The Debt campaign, which wiped out vast sums of international debt owed by Third World governments.
The Oscar-winning musician - real name Paul Hewson - has been accused of hypocrisy, however, after it was revealed that he has established a private equity fund to invest more than £1billion in a series of money-making ventures.
He also has a staggering property portfolio which includes a villa in the South of France, a lavish Italian-style palazzo overlooking the sea near Dublin and a £15million penthouse in New York.

you people are cruel....would you rather him starve himself ala Jolie? I think THAT would be more of a slap in the face to the third world. Plus , weight gain can be the result of a lot of different things , not necessarily stuffing face all the time. Give the guy a break.
