Skeletal Cate Blanchett shocks NY fashion gala

Actress Cate Blanchett cut a startling figure on the red carpet at the Costume Institute Gala in New York, sparking fears for her health.

Looking pale and incredibly gaunt in a metallic fringed gown, the Oscar-nominated star's collarbone appeared to be protruding from her now tiny frame.



The 5ft 8in actress usually known for her elegance and old Hollywood glamour, shocked onlookers with her dramatic transformation.

Blanchett has always been slender, slim,ethereal figure has long been a designer’s dream on the red carpet.

But Australian-born Blanchett's new skeletal appearance suggests she may have succumb to Hollywood's size zero phenomenon.



The 37-year-old recently came in at number 10 on Time magazine's annual list of the world's 100 most influential people, under the "artists and entertainers" category.


The star of Notes On A Scandal was at the Metropolitan Museum of Art to honour fashion designer Paul Poiret, 60 years after his death.

Blanchett was joined at the event by a host of high profile fashion and celebrity figures including Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Lindsay Lohan and Scarlett Johansson.

Cate has always been thin like this, I don't think she's starving herself for anything new, she's always been like this.

How incredibly sad, she is exceptional at her craft, she doesn't need to do this to herself. Hopefully (fingers crossed) its for an upcoming role.

Edited to add: Okay, I feel better. She dropped the weight to play a cancer patient. Whew!

UPDATE - Cate has apparently lost the weight for a movie called "Cancer Vixen." That's what people are saying,.
