Default 'Precious' star Gabourey Sidibe: "My first diet started when I was six years old"

'Precious' star Gabourey Sidibe visited Oprah Friday to promote her movie, in which she plays an obese teenager who is twice impregnated by her father. Gabby's own Harlem adolescence was not nearly as troubled but she did struggle for years with her body image.

Oprah pointed out that director Lee Daniels has said Gabby speaks "like a white girl from the Valley" and is so confident that she is "either in denial about her physicality or from another planet."

"It's something I've had to work at. My first diet started when I was six years old," Gabby said. "I've never been a small girl. One day I had to sit down with myself and decide that I loved myself no matter what my body looked like and what other people thought about my body."

She said that she was 21 or 22 when she finally became comfortable in her own skin. "I got tired of feeling bad all the time. I got tired of hating myself."

She has a great attitude. She has confidence which is a womans most attractive quality IMO.

And now we will see how long before Hollywood gets to her and she loses 100 lbs. I saw a show today on the making of the movie, and the Director said it was very hard to find anybody who was already acting that would fit anywhere near the size of this character.

It is so important to be comfortable in your skin and to have a positive body image. However, at a certain point you should be more concerned with health than vanity. She should want to lose weight so she can live a long and healthy life.

It's so sad that dieting was such a big part of her childhood at such a young age. When young kids are conditioned to view diets and food in such a negative light it really fucks with your mind... good to know she's comfortable in her own skin.. I hope it lasts.

There is a difference between having confidence and being so large that yout health is as risk. It should be her choice what to do about her weight but I think it's the wrong message to send out in a way. I say this as a person who has weight problems , not some size 0 fool.

That's great she feels better about herself and all, but she is seriously unhealthy. I don't think it's admirable or responsible to advocate obesity. I feel her pain, I struggled with my weight for years. But if you're tired of hating yourself, do something about it. You don't have to be a twig, just be a healthier you. No one should be comfortable and happy being morbidly obese. Sorry if that's mean or un-PC.

I have a friend that size who eats healthily and exercises regularly. Some women just ARE that size...even if they are healthy.
