Maybe the best thing for the country is for him to not seek reelection in 2012 and let Hillary run.

I think he didn't realize how much the Congressional Republicans would be against him. They have acted like petulant children since the beginning. He was trying really hard to avoid the partisan label and let the Repugs be part of the solution. By the time he figured out they wouldn't play, it was too late, and he had lost his political capital. And along with it, his enthusiasm.

    sounds like bullshit to me.
and i can't believe i'm defending obama so much lately but really, i just don't understand the attitude on the democratic side, acting as if he's the worst president ever. he might not be the socialist messiah that the press somehow built him up to be and that he never was but just think of the alternative.
if dems keep acting like petulant children, and the right-wing tards on the other side keep gaining strength, what do you think is going to happen? republicans will win in 2 years.
and sure, people keep saying that it doesn't make that much of a difference and that obama might as well be bush and bla, bla, bla...
but they're forgetting one key thing: presidents appoint supreme court justices. and the last thing people want is republicans appointing some fresh, springy 40 year-old conservatard to the court and have him live to be 100.

and the supreme court is the only way real change has ever come about in the US - that's how segregation ended, how abortion came to be legalised, etc...
it's the courts that will ultimately decide gay marriage and other minority issues. don't wait around expecting a democratic president or congress to get those things done - the US is simply too divided and too skewed to the right for that to ever happen through an election or through congress - minority issues will never be popular enough for them to be decided 'democratically'.
that's what the courts are there for.
and that's why you want a democrat in the white house, even if he's not turning out the way you wanted.

Sput, again: he's continued almost all of Bush's policies. How would the alternative be any different?

You guys need to break out of this "Dems good, GOP bad" mentality. If the Dems are continuing all the horrible policies of the GOP, how are there 2 separate parties?

I mean, especially for the gays. Wtf is the difference? No movement for rights under Dems is identical to no movement under the GOP.

Obama didn't even nominate any actual liberal judges to the bench. Sotomayer isn't liberal, she's a centrist. Kagan is a blank slate. The court still skews right as a result.

She's the same stock as Obama, just with a bit more spine. Corporatist warmonger, belongs to a creepy christian cult "The Family".. and was apparently "misled" into voting for the Iraq war, which is a total lie. Nobody was misled into that.

So she's either a liar or a retard.

Well I can tell you that Obama's media coverage Down Under is practically ZERO. He's the Invisible President. He's promised (and then cancelled) at least 2 visits here which hasn't gone down too well. As I suspected from the start, he's a triumph of style over substance and it's a big worry considering he still effectively rules the world.

However, there have been plenty of stories here about the Obama marriage and how it very nearly fell apart before the campaign started and then they had to stay together because they had no choice.

If Hillary is smart, and she is, she'll run again next time and probably win because she's most definitely got the experience, ability and ambition (and money), and by then the American people will realise that Obama is weak and ineffectual which is the last thing you need when the country is as war and has huge economic problems. Plus there's no credible GOP alternative and I think even the most hardened redneck would prefer to see a white woman in the Oval Office than a black man.

I doubt the public will elect another Democrat next time around.. and the US is *always* at war.

i don't. i have a "dems bad, GOP worse" mentality.

as for the supreme court, sure sotomayor is a centrist but that's still a hell of a lot better than another clarence fucking thomas or anthony scalia which is what there would be more of if the republicans take the white house.

the US are, on the whole, a conservative society. even more so now in these years of economic turmoil and wars - more religion, more xenophobia, more insularism and nationalism. just because there are pockets of liberalism here and there doesn't mean those people will ever be in a position of true power.

on social issues, the best bet is the supreme court because it will be decades before americans, as a society, are ready to accept the changes that have taken place in parts of europe and countries like canada and new zealand and even argentina.

I just googled New Zealand because I'm always looking for new places to live if the shit hits the fan here. Wow, that's a beautiful country!! What's the economy/job situation like there? Does it have the jumping spiders like Australia does?

Sput, you get it. America is not all that liberal. When has this country ever elected an uber-liberal President? Not once. Most Americans are centrists and vote accordingly. The few liberals that have been elected to Congress end up introducing bill after bill that never passes. The courts have been our main conduit for justice. Every now and then there is so much public outrage over an issue that Congress and the White House pass a law that is remarkably liberal. Take the Vietnam War. Until Walter Cronkite started listing the dead night after night on CBS Evening News, most Americans supported the war. It wasn't until those people spoke out against Vietnam that our gov't. started to take steps to get the fuck out of there. The same thing happened with Civil Rights, Women's Rights and it will happen with Gay Rights. That is our reality.

Where the fuck is King when I need him? *sigh*

Does either the writer "Ulsterman" or the site, NewsFlavor have any credibility at all? Is it likely that some "White House insider" would give an exclusive to some guy at this site? It's not a legitimate news site and anyone can submit content. I could do my own White House leaks article if I wanted.

Diva, I think you found the lazy terminology interesting because of the stereotypes that some people have about black folks. Take a racist and ask him or her to stereotype black people and you will find "lazy" will come up time and time again. As will, "really into sports." I think this is a hachet job on the Pres to paint a negative picture wrapped in outdated stereotypes. It seems very subtle, but certainly will ring in the ears of those who are already against him.
