Yes but the reason why they haven't done so (US/EU) is still there

I doubt the US has any capacity to stop them right now. Hell, the Kurds would put up one hell of a fight.

Turkey desperately wants into the EU ($$$) and it has an abysmal record of human rights in its own country. If it's smart, it will stay away from the Kurds because that will surely put their EU dreams on hold for quite some time.

Turkey is part of Nato, they have military bases and get high revenues from that, they are in negociation to enter the EU which means billions of Euros of subsidies to look for, they have got too much to lose - Also the Kurdish part of Iraq has important oil reserves that are now US turf, the Turks know better than to mess with that

Those reserves will either be their salvation or lead to their destruction. I hope it is the former.

I think the Kurds are fucked either way. If those reserves they have are really valuable (which they are) then both the US and Turkey will try to manipulate them to get what they want and leave the Kurds in the dust.

Though I never though Turkey would pull something like this now.

It's really fucking sad. all these wars over stupid shit like ethinic groups. Why won't governments just try to recognize everyone as equal?

    One reason.

    RELIGION.

    It needs to be banned.

Heh I would'nt say that relgion needs to be banned, it needs to be somehow taken out of the governments in the Middle East...But that's a really daunting task to do since the Middle East is steeped into Islam (Saudi Arabia is where some of the most important Islamic pligramages are taken place).

As mentioned before the Kurds are secular compared to other groups in Iraq that could be a big reason why thye're targeted so much by the insurgents. *sigh*

Actually, the Kurds are just like other Sunni Muslims. Some of the mare religious and some of them are not. My dad has Kurdish friends from Iraq.

They are targeted by insurgents, the Sunni ones in Iraq because the Kurds are allied with the Shiites, not because they are secular.

That is what I ALWAYS say....The U.S. TRIES to use the justification of getting Saddam as in he was gassing the Kurds (when back then, the U.S. reported it was Iran that did it). The Turkish Kurds are the ones that get it THE WORST. Turkey has been fighting with the PKK (Turkish Kurd resistance/ terrorist group) for decades. Most of the Kurdish population reside in Turkey. Their homes have been ravaged and ethnic cleansing has been going on for DECADES in Turkey. Also, in Turkey they are not allowed even speaking their own language or express their culture. That is how bad it is. The world remains SILENT on Turkey's treatment of the Kurds and trust me, they have had it much much worse than under Saddam. Saddam supressed them too, but at least they had freedom to express their culture. In the 1970s Saddam infact signed to give them autonomy to rule with self-government in Northern Iraq. So the U.S. goes ahead and rambles on about the Kurds under Saddam when in fact since they are allied with Turkey, they say jack****. Exactly like when Saddam was using their weapons to drop on the Kurds.

I think the Kurds deserve a homeland and their independence but here is another thing....They are SO divided. There are tensions and conflicts between each other because they speak different languages and come from different tribes. So there are clashes between them and they are not unified.

Here is another thing...If the Iraqi Kurds get their independence then definetly the Kurds in Turkey want to also. But what about the Kurds in Iran and Syria also?

Here is my opinion on that...

Well, actually the Middle East conflict is not deeply rooted in religion. It is deep-rooted in ethnic, political and TRIBAL affairs.Take away religion and wars and conflicts will STILL be there.

In the Middle East, usually, all religious people will get along. It is only when it comes to religious factions wanting to get POWER that is when it becomes a problem and everyone butts heads.

The Middle Eastern nations today were put by colonial powers by just drawing lines on a map and then putting in friendly Arab regimes that would cater to them. If you look at the Middle East, in MOST of the governments it is the MINORITY of a country whether as in religious minority or for example dictatorship regimes that rule. That is what has created the tensions and conflicts in fighting for regimes who the majority think misrepresent them.

Actually, MOST of the Middle East used to have secular politics and regimes back before the 80s. Then because of Western bullying and foreign policies, religious fundamentalism rose out of its ashes as a political tool to resist the Western powers and secular Arab regimes.

It is just like any other political ideology, whether democracy, communism, socialism, religious fundamentalism, etc are all just political tools USED to fool the masses in gaining their means. It can be used both in good and bad ways.

So, it is not just religion, the problems of the Middle East are deep-rooted in factors WAY beyond that which all go back as a result of history.

    Ugh.

Can't people just say "Hey, we need to get over this. How about we work positively, going forward from this point? Whatever happened in the past is in the past."

These people need self improvement seminars.

exactly. that's why it will never happen. turkey was recently 'promoted' to potential candidate status by the EU and will basically do anything to achieve that. if they do this they will blow their chances (which aren't that great anyway). this is why croatia is taking so long to join - a booming economy is not enough to make up for its human rights record and actions during the balkan wars.
