"We Germans are not all smiles & chocolate!"
    ~The Simpsons

The Germans are kept in place be a sense of collective guilt, which is not so much the sense that they've done anything wrong; but that the world is judging them, watching them, and waiting for them to screw up again. They share an uneasy feeling that their next major F* up might be their last. They only barely got off on the last one - and then by scapegoating their leaders ("we didn't know" is their constant refrain, like Schultz on the TV show. Yet the camps moved into high gear during the final months of the war, when Hitler was drafting 14 year old boys to fight at the front. Those camps were staffed by civilians, middle aged hausfraus most of the time). They are trying to buy back their right to exist by constantly putting on their best behavior, since their membership in the human race seems to be 'probationary'.

Austrians are fond of reminding everyone that they're not German, then they move into full swing!

my parents lived in austria for 7 years and i lived there for 2 years. yes, there are still a lot of very right-wing, racist people there and yes, you do find people with attitude problems like a*o pointed out but at the same time in vienna at least there's also a huge section of the population that is very egalistarian, very cultivated and civilised and nothing like this racist scum.
but it's also true that i've met more racists in austria than in german. especially once you leave the cities. the rural ones are kind of backwards.

Default America is once again a force for good

This really shows what a big deal it was when America elected Obama: they've broken the colour barrier, and America is gonna change the way the world thinks about race. 'President of the United States' still carries a lot of weight, and you're gonna have a lot of people rethinking their attitudes. European journalists and heads of state are gonna be a lot less likely to make borderline comments (after a year or so) when the head of the free world is an Afro-American. Pres Elect Barack Obama is now officially top of the pecking order.
