I do have faith in him to pick someone who really knows the law and the Constitution, not some Harriet Miers type.
From what I read after the tax fuck ups they made the vetting process even harder, which is why some of the positions are still unfilled. People didn't want to endure the tougher process.

who cares what gender they are or what race or sexual orientation or how many limbs they have.

I want someone competent, even handed, logical and based in reality.

^^That's the way it should be. But a lot of people want to see certain groups represented more. Obama's coming under pressure from some Hispanic groups to pick a Hispanic judge, and women's groups want another women. He should pick a Hispanic woman and kill two birds with one stone.

It matters so that you don't have all 9 justices viewing the law with the same biases. A court composed of 9 straight, white males aren't going to identify and understand all the legal problems that exist for other people in the nation. Life doesn't occur in a vacuum chamber.

The nominee should be empathetic with people, as the laws are there to protect people. However, the nominee must be trained and preferably experienced in the practice of law. They should have a broad knowledge of existing laws and court cases, and know how to research what they do not know.

I'll be overjoyed when he leaves, but Scalia won't leave easily. He'll probably say, "From my cold dead hands!"
