This becomes a tricky issue in regard to the fact that we already have long standing memorials in the shape of crosses as general memorials to the war dead. That sort of indicates a past acceptance of crosses in general memorials.

In Arlington there are two large memorials in the shape of crosses- The Argonne Cross- to honor the WW1 dead, and Canadian Cross of Sacrifice.

If anyone is interested, this list has the approved religious symbols that can go on grave markers:

The former CFB here has one of those swords on it's cenotaph (the All Sapper's cenotaph):

Thought it was a cross for the longest time until I actually got up close to it.

So the judge is essentially arguing that it is "outrageous" to refer to the cross as a Christian symbol?

No. He is saying that the cross is a symbol which honors all who have fallen in battle, not just those who were Christian. He is right. Just about every war cemetery from any western country I could find on Google features a predominant cross.

This is private land. The veterans who own the land should be allowed to keep their cross there.

I wonder how non-Xtians feel about that? Do they agree that this cross represents them, too?

I've been discussing this today with a coworker. And historically, the cross has long been used as a memorial- as I noted above.

The Cross of Sacrifice like the one from Arlington is used in many places across the world as a war memorial, and has long been accepted as a general memorial. There's one in Australia, Hong Kong, Turkey (neither of the previous two being known as bastions of christianity), Begium, they're all over in France.

There is also a long tradition of using crosses as military medals: the Croix de Guerre, the Ordre de la Libération, the Victoria Cross, the Iron Cross, the Military Cross, the Navy Cross...the list is endless.

All the history shows a long standing acceptance of a cross as a military symbol, and not a religious one in this context.

Well, this cross looks like a Xtian cross, not a Navy Cross or an Iron Cross. I really doubt that the people who erected this cross were considering any other besides the cross of their lord.

Since it's wood, was it ever even intended to be a permanent monument?

I don't suppose the dead in question give a crap which symbol is used to mark their memorial(s).

I have no idea what they were thinking, and neither do you.

But that doesn't change the fact that the cross has long been accepted as a military memorial in places all over the world, to honor the dead regardless of faith.

Turkey and Hong Kong as well- neither one would be the west, or considered a Christian nation. No one there seems at all disturbed by those memorials.

Just let the thing be, it's old, and it's not hurting anyone. We no longer use it in new memorials, as a society we've become aware enough to make sure not to do something that would make anyone feel excluded.

What about their family members? They are the ones who are upset. It's on private land. They are using an almost universal symbol of respecting their war dead. It's their land - let them have their cross.
