No they are not. Again many of them were just like you before they lost their jobs. Some of those "freeloaders" are working at a reduced pay & are STILL paying taxes. Just like you. You're using a broad brush. No can do.

And you didn't answer the question.

Thanks, Penny. That's what I thought at first glance, but I wasn't sure.

Maybe they should look into the pensions. I never really knew abything about California pensions until I read an article about this retired firefighter who beat his neighbor's dog to death. A lot of people were calling for his pension to be taken away which was $100,000 a year for life. I don't know but that seems to be a huge amount. I googled a but about pensions:

As of May, 2008, there were 4,820 CalPERS retirees receiving annual pensions in excess of $100,000. That didn’t include government retirees in 80 other plans in California—judges, UC, STRS, charter cities, and 1937 Act counties. About half of these retirees were public safety workers: cops, firefighters, prison guards. The remaining half includes former city managers, assistant managers, county executives, district attorneys, engineers, finance officers, personnel directors, computer scientists, and physicists.
Since May 2008, more than 120 new retirees have joined the “$100,000 Club” – each month - every month. That’s been going on for the last 12 months – more than 1,500 have joined that well-paid retirement group ; this rate of increase will accelerate as droves of retired public safety workers who are now in the $90,000 to $100,000 range receive annual cost of living increases.

That's a lot of money! I kick myself for not getting a state government job.

The rich never pay taxes like the rest of the 90%. The rich stick their money in all sorts of schemes that help them avoid taxes. They also get massive tax breaks for 'investments'. I can't believe anyone, in this day and age, believes that the rich pay their fair share. They don't. They just make themselves feel better by giving a bit to charity.

Which they use as a tax write off.

What I quoted was your response to someone asking about the elderly and disabled.

    How dare you.

For example, did you know that the unemployment rate amongst our nation's intellectually disabled community is 90%? I do. I heard Dr. Timothy Shriver of the Special Olympics speak of that not long ago.

And what of the elderly? There are some of our nation's elders who just plainly worked at humble jobs and live off of their Social Security and not much else. Do you understand that?

    Come on now.

Weirdly, I'm reading a book about the East End of London 1888. It's pretty graphic in its descriptions of the grinding poverty and very clear about the reasons behind it and how the refusal of the councils and the city government made it worse. Somehow I was reminded of it while reading about Ahnold's big plans. Wait till people start dying of starvation in the street and crime rates soar. That might bring a change of plans.

I blame Reagan for propagating the "welfare queen" stereotype. Oh, and what a coincidence.. another governor of California.

Agree completely. This one is not violating board rules I guess, and she will not get the ban bus-but I do not want the ban bus to run her over- I want her run over by a real bus...

A bus full of poor children, immigrants, minorities, disabled people, the elderly, socialists, etc. etc.

How the fuck can someone say that... small children, the disabled, the elderly needing home health care(who have probably worked their asses off most of their lives, helping to build this damn country and who have now come upon old age and hard times along with the infirmities of old age)..

could be freeloaders is just egregious and beyond my comprehension as a sane human being.

This person sounds like they are one step away from advocating genocidal murder ala "a permanent solution" here. Just sickening.

2/3 of welfare recipients in California are minors.
Supposing that's true, purple rain, it's all the more reason to continue welfare. What would you do... let the children starve?

Taxes on Californians and most Americans are much lower than they've been in a generation.

I'm sure some cutbacks are needed, but a large part of the problem is that taxes have been cut and raising taxes has been off the table for so long.

Was that when workhouses were around? Seems like some people would be glad to see their return

I love how people throw the phrase "personal responsibility" around to blame people for situations outside of their control.

It's always easier to blame personal factors than situational ones.. especially when it means you can delude yourself into thinking the inequality is deserved and not systematically reinforced. Plus, you get the warm fuzzies if you're well off... it means you aren't a "freeloader"/totally parasitic fuck-up like these people are.
