Interesting. Not taking the first step has to be Nicole's choice. Having fried hair while doing a job search is also an image no- no.

I have been out of college for over 20 years. It was a piece of paper to get started- the rest was my own doing.

    No excuses- get it done.

I'll admit that I went to college because I didn't want to go find a job, but dang it, I finished. I had NO money, but got grants & loans & worked and you know what? That degree was was the foundation for the career that I have today.

Yet again (for the eleventy-ninth time ) I agree 100% with january. Very well put, as usual. It's extremely annoying to read posts that insult and criticize someone when the poster hasn't even tried to accomplish anything herself. It's like if we all don't succeed in her eyes, it's our fault because we're ignorant or something. If she doesn't succeed, it's because the world won't cut her a break. I'm not trying to kick Nicole because she can't kick back at this particular moment, but I do hope she reads all this and gets angry enough to make a change in her life.

I think she could do something about her life if she really wanted to. She needs to stop making excuses for "why not" and just "do".

Whoa, encouraging Nicole or telling her the honest truth about her situation is one thing, but picking on her physical appearance is taking it too far. IDK how you know her hair is "fried" but either way, it's irrelevant because lots of people in this world have damaged hair and still manage to find/keep jobs.

We're all entitled to our opinion, but she's not here to defend herself.

^ Sparkly, Nicolewashere made a thread about her hair and posted photos. She was asking for advice about it.

^You're right. I just found the thread, so I do apologize and please disregard my previous comment. I misunderstood the intention.

Well, as much as Nicole can be frustrating, having a big group pick on her isn't likely to motivate her.....human nature is such that it just makes people more defensive and stubborn. Yes, even though people were nice and encouraging to begin with and nothing happened. I've been lucky in life, parents paid my way through college, so I can't relate to how hard it must be to try to put yourself through when you have no resources and you've already screwed up big time by not getting thru high school. But I do know the value of discipline and hard work---there's no substitute, and she just has to take that first step of getting a GED, which really isn't that hard. At all. Then take life one step at a time. She has to get to the point of believing that nothing would be worse than continuing to exist under other peoples' authority, depending on them for everything, living in a shithole of an area, and having no hope of getting out and moving on. I hope she reaches that point soon.....you have to take action, and yes even risks, to find happiness. It's that simple---continued crap, or moving toward happiness. She is bright and seems to have some awareness of life, so the only obstacle is wallowing in the familiar crap that she knows versus going for something different.

Well she's certainly not going to get motivated if she gets nothing but validation for the crappy life hand she was dealt. And everybody tried the gentle, encouraging approach and it fell dead to the floor. She needs to hear the truth, no matter how hard it is to hear. She put all this personal information about herself on this board, so it's not out of line for us to comment on it, and unfortunately pretty much everybody has the same opinion - she needs to stop criticizing everyone and everything, stop making excuses and DO something to make a change. Until she does that, it's going to be extremely annoying to see her taunt and insult a poster who actually did get an education.

If it's not education, what exactly can get you somewhere today?

Oh good grief. I usually don't comment in threads like these, but this is just too much. OMG, she broke down and asked if the fast food places were hiring? Wow, just...wow.

Amazing that someone who places no value on education thinks she's too good to take a job that hires people with no experience and minimal formal education. Really, why would someone want to take a job where they could make a couple hundred bucks a week when they could sit home and make zero? Makes perfect sense to me.

And I'm sure people are just lining up to get a place with someone who has no job and no money to contribute towards rent and food. Good luck with that.

Everybody has to start somewhere. Well, unless they just don't want to start at all.

I'm still calling my friends and asking them about moving.

    wow, what a strange thread.

Nicole is in her comfort zone. It's bloody scary jumping out of it (I know this!) but god, once you get out it feels so much better. Stop procrastinating Nicole!!
