Have you checked craigslist? Stores are always looking for extra help during the holidays.. and if you make a good impression they may want to keep you on as a permanent worker. There are always alternatives... you just have to look for them. You can't use other people as a rationalization for lack of trying. College degrees may be worth less than they should nowadays in this economy and I admit feeling discouraged and sad sometimes about the prospect of not making great money immediately after I graduate but it has taught me time management skills, introduced me to new ways of thinking, and enabled me to fine-tune things that fascinate and stimulate me intellectually. Making a blanket statement that all you do in college is get drunk, have sex, and party all the time is a little bit insulting considering I have all but given that up for the most part during the semesters in order to focus on school.

Penny - as an employer it would depend on the job if I looked at someone with a degree or not, however, I look for someone who has get up & go, has initiative, takes responsibility for themselves, someone who gets off their arse and does stuff. If it was between 2 equally unemployed people & 1 did voluntary work and one sat at home eating fast food & posting to a forum all day, it would be a no brainer which I'd employ.
I personally don't think that you'll have any issue finding a job and finding the right job for you with the right company will come.

Thank you, Novice... Some days I do feel discouraged and then other days I realize that I really am taking the initiative to be able to choose what I learn and decide how I use this knowledge to shape a career (and ultimately a life) for myself. Having said that, I do realize that there are two types of intelligence: the kind you learn in a classroom and the kind you learn from living life... they are not mutually exclusive.. they overlap. Sorry but I have to keep going back to the generalization in regards to college... the idea that all people do in college is fuck and swap STDs just pisses me off... I know people that fit this (sweeping) stereotype and I know people that are dedicated to their studies and are learning so many valuable things in their classes and through their experiences. I really hate to be a bitch, Nicole, but moving away from home can change the scenery but it won't change the situation... get off the couch, find something you're passionate about and weave that into what you plan to do.. take some accountability and DO something.. don't rely on other peoples' excuses to justify not even trying.

You'll feel really grateful when you're sitting through interviews being questioned about your college degree. I know for a fact that if I didn't have a degree that I would have lost those great opportunities. You're right too, college teaches you a lot of discipline and structure (or at least did for me). I gave up a lot for the college experience, too. I didn't have much of a life for some time. I was working full-time during the days and going to school nights and weekends, I was too exhausted to do much else. I understand that for some, college was never an option and I do feel for them and I don't think that necessarily makes them "out of the game." There are very successful people with only high school degrees. But unfortunately I feel this is the exception and not the norm. Most big companies won't hire you without a degree these days, and in my field most companies want you to have a masters as well.

Thing is Penny - on this subject we've been here again & again & again (June 2008 18 months ago http://www.gossiprocks.com/forum/hig...ml#post1233154), posters offer advise & support and it gets shot down with passive-aggressive BS my mom doesn't want me to work, its too far to go to work, etc etc etc. I'm not unsympathetic to people in difficult circumstances, but when I was skint & the bank was threatening to make me bankrupt, I didn't post top a forum crying, I got off my arse & worked two jobs instead of one.... there is the difference. Some do & some just moan about it.

At least you're trying to achieve something, plus your exam results are amazing. Just keep doing what you're doing and it'll all be fine.

Like I said: there are ALWAYS alternatives.. you just have to look for them.. you won't find them in-between the couch cushions.

Once I found .85 in my couch cushions.....another time I found a pen. That's it.

A pen? That's tempting.... pretty awesome. Does it have multiple ink colors?

It was a papermate erasable pen, very special.

Well there are job ops in the area, but since they're at the local casino & a GEDor equiv is required she needs to go back to basics.... get the GED...

Della Lamb: Adult Ed Report Card
"If you want to attend a particular class, simply go to the first convenient class meeting and introduce yourself to the teacher. He/She will help you with enrollment, which is a simple process. All classes are free of charge. Child care is provided free to adult parents who are students."

    Places to get a GED
Technical Schools and Colleges Search by Zip Code
Testing Centre details - to help you find out wht you need.. GED Testing Centers Map
The test cost $20 and I can't find a cost for the courses, which are even available free on-line.....
"Is there a cost to enroll in the GED OnlineClass program?
Since we are funded completely through the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), there is no cost to enroll. However, you do have to be a Missouri resident."

    Problem solved.

I'm forcing a hiatus on her. She needs to cool herself off. Maybe she'll take advantage of the 2 week ban to find out about the GED or job hunt (and since this isn't a private forum she'll be able to see these posts when logged out).

Probably won't help though, it's a big internet, she'll probably go harass other boards instead of people here.

Hopefully this doesn't turn into a PB-like situation... but that would be sad. And maybe a little bit funny.
