I never used to, but I can't think of any other reason why so many people in the south especially, hate Obama. He is actually pretty middle of the road no matter what anyone tries to tell us. This is sooo sad. Everytime I think about becoming a citizen, something like this happens and I change my little Canadian mind.
If I can't be a good example, then let me be a horrible warning.

I don't think it is race per se, at least not for everybody. I think it is stupid people (mostly) being led around by their demagogues.

Presidents do this kind of stuff all the time--Obama seemed to really connect well with kids during the campaign and I think he feels like he could do some good encouraging kids to stay in school, etc.

There will always be some kids who look up to the president, whoever that is, and others who don't. My kids are teenagers now, but I remember driving around with a carload of younger kids back in 2000, listening to them talk about the candidates and who they liked and didn't like. They have to learn to form their own opinions sometime.

Sad, but true. People not liking Obama because of his policies is one thing.

But these people that seem to be losing their minds (birthers, secessionists, death panelists, etc) are just diehard racists. Or it's just people who can't wrap their minds around seeing a black man being anything other than a criminal, athlete or entertainer.

It's not because Obama is black that parents have a problem with this.
It's because Obama is a reptilian, evil socialist, christian hating, half breed muslin!!!

There was a lot of disdain towards Clinton, but I've never seen this amount of absolute vitriol before towards any one man. You have to question why. As nana said, he is actually more moderate than is usually suggested, I think. If people are so angry about the economy, why isn't that directed towards the previous administration? Why don't they realize how much the Iraqi war put us in debt? Bush was a big spender in office and Obama inherited a lot of problems - if you want to blame Obama exclusively, thats ridiculous. But man, some people HATE him, and it leaves me scratching my head. There is something going on thats much deeper under the surface, and yes sometimes I do have to wonder if race plays a factor - not exclusively, but its there. Mainly because I have seen a huge increase in racist and xenophobic emails - I think some people actually feel threatened by him. Like whites are somehow becoming the minority and everyone has this victim complex. He scares people because they think the status quo has changed now.

shameful that people t actually admit they hate him...or anyone for that matter. What a stressful emotion to have. For what? I can see dislike but hate?

The thing that I love is how some of these people act as if the country was in great shape for 8 years, and then imploded the second Obama took office.

I was another site, and they weren't even talking politics, and some guy mentioned at random how America was a free country until the election in 2008. I was thinking, yeah the country was so 'free' that we were torturing and illegally spying on people & stripping civil liberties with the Patriot Act.

It's total revisionism, and it makes me wonder where the hell these people were before the election. Were they asleep?

I think there's a lot of displacement going on--I'm guessing there is some racism, but I think it's subconscious. Considering that some of these people are practically fucking comatose, it's not surprising that they can't put their fingers on it.

I agree there's a lot of displacement and revisionism going on.

And I think some of the racism is subconcious, while most of it is blatant. But I also think that there are still a lot of people who are stuck in the 'fear-mode' of the Bush years. And you combine the fear of another 9/11 attack with a bad economy and Obama having a Muslim name it's making people lose their minds.

I know, its crazy. The comparisons to Hitler, the Antichrist, being a fascist, a Kenyan, not a "real American", etc...they go on and on. And I know personally because a ton of those insane emails end up in my inbox, it drives me insane. And I think these birthers have spawned a terrible movement based on fear and xenophobia, its quite a scary environment. People have a lot of fear that illegals are taking over - hell, there is even one in the White House! Thats the general gist I get.

Ding ding ding! I think most people have been taught to fear so much that its clouding their whole sense of perception.

Yeah, I think there was so much fear generated during that time (some of it rightly so, but a lot of it manipulated or coyly redirected to the wrong target) that people feel naked and scared without Bush/Cheney lulling them into feeling secure by telling them that we're going to kill a bunch of Arabs and/or get information by any means (torture). It's like someone took away their paternalistic white daddies and replaced them with some scary black Muslim.

I cannot tell you how pissed this whole thing makes me. He's the freaking President of the United States and if he wants to talk to school kids about doing their best, for goodness sake, he should. I've heard enough about "indoctrination of our youth" and letting the "opposition" have a response... a response to what? What in the world would they say? "No, don't do well in school" or "what he just said" -- stupidest shit I've heard in ages. And if I hear one more person invoke Hitler I am going to scream. What a bunch of racist dumbasses we have living in the US.

It's not like Obama was going to talk to kids about politics. He was only going to encourage them to stay in school and to challenge them to find new ways to expand their ideas.

Damn, it's like the man can't do anything right no matter what he does.

I don't believe the racism is subconscious. I believe the racist are hiding behind other "platforms" to espouse their racism and know damed good and well what they are doing. As I said previously, it is the same assholes who screamed at me and called me unpatriotic for questioning Dubbya and the war. The ultra right wing nutjobs have figured out how to use protests and speaking out against Obama to disguise the racism and think we are all too stupid to undertand what they are doing.
