I hadn't thought about that but yes, the Vatican has diplomatic immunity, just like any other city-state or country. And America is notoriously twitchy about messing around with that. Just think about the international war crimes court, etc.

Nah, the case they're making is that the Vatican has no FINANCIAL relationship with the bishops in America, just a religious one.

Which is a total fucking crock of shit.

Well, it's kind of like trying to go after the president and/or Prime Minister of France, as well as the government. It's not going to fly because they are a sovereign state. The Pope is the Head of State so is therefore, by international law, afforded diplomatic immunity unless under extreme circumstances. I think it's a crock of shit because child rape over the period of time this has been happening is an extreme circumstance but I can see where many governments (not just the US government) are leery of rocking that boat.

Obama is, if anything, a master at avoiding rocking said boat

Like many other governments dealing with the same issue. See Germany, Poland, Brazil, etc.

I don't think it's right but it is what it is.

They should be trying to remove Diplomatic Immunity for pedophiles, not upholding it. FFS!

Pointing to others and saying "They're doing it too" does not excuse the man.

Well, diplomatic immunity has gotten many a low level diplomat off on murder and rape charges over the years--and that includes their family members as well. Anyone else remember the son of some diplomat at the UN in NYC? He raped a bunch of women but had to be let go because he had...let's say it together...diplomatic immunity. It's a double-edged sword. Many of our own diplomats have gotten away with murder due to this.

It's not an excuse, it's just a fact. If countries start over-riding diplomatic immunity it opens a real Pandora's box and it would mean that diplomats and others covered by this international agreement from all countries could be held accountable for crimes that might, in some countries, be ok but not in others. Think adultery or homosexuality in the Middle East.

It's not a double-edged sword in my book because none of these motherfuckers, no matter which side they are on, should be getting away with criminality just because of who they are.

Not saying whether I agree with it or not... but it was bound to turn out like this.

But it is. If you decide to supercede diplomatic immunity then you open the door to all sorts of things, mainly because every country has different laws. As I said, adultery and homosexuality would be two key points. Say you have diplomat in a country that condemns adulterers to death and s/he commits adultery. Do you really want Her/him to be put to death because of the laws of that country? It's a sticky, weird, squiggly question because at the end of the day you have to accept certain things that are abhorrent to you and your society...and that works on both ends.
