The NRA is not the evil entity it is made out to be.

I have discussed this with others before. Guns do not kill people. Morons with guns kill people. The south is known to be pro NRA. Many of us grew up surrounded by weapons and were taught the proper respect for firearms.

The NRA is protecting the rights of citizens to bear arms and protect ourselves against the predators. The criminals who are armed more than likely did not go through the proper procedure to obtain those firearms.

I know the pro and anti gun lobbies are never going to agree on this but from my own life experience living in large cities, often with very violent gang sub-cultures, I have never for one single moment felt I needed a gun to protect myself or others against 'predators' (nice emotive word there), let alone felt I had some God-given right to own one. But I have always lived in countries where the ownership of firearms by civilians is strictly limited, regulated and enforced. Of course the crims get hold of guns illegally but in the vast majority of cases they use them to kill other crims. Boo hoo.

The argument that 'any moron can shoot a gun' does not apply if the moron can't easily get hold of one in the first place and in countries where gun control exists it's actually still VERY difficult to get hold of an illegal handgun unless you know the 'right' people.

I am inherently suspicious of the NRA. They have far too many business interests to be up front about any idea no matter what it is, especially if it involves money. 2nd amendment my ass. Prove to me that it says that Joe Blow can carry a gun. Having said that......I am inherently suspicious of the government, no doubt especially since chimpy mcdouchebag and company came into power. I am entirely against the government coming into a person's home and taking their personal belongings, guns or otherwise, when that person gave them no reason to do so.

That leads me into a quandary. Usually when my husband and I get into this he says "cars can kill, would you outlaw them?" and I tell him that objectively cars have a useful purpose for humanity, that we need them to go about our daily business. Outside of recreation/collection, guns are strictly killing machines. They have no outside purpose. Cars do. The benefits outweigh the risks, the pros outweigh the cons.

Legal gun possession is regulated. To purchase and license a firearm cost much more than ones illegaly gained. Banning all firearms will affect the legal possession rate. This would drive the black market prices up, but the products would still be there.

Prohibition did not make the consumption of alchohol disappear, but many bootleggers became quite wealthy.

I am not a member or supporter of the NRA. I think it has become much to political. I am a proponent of an individual's right to bear legal arms. I also encourage those who have legal firearms to be properly trained in the use, storage, and safety of firearms.

It has been interesting to see how the European Countries have responding to this tragedy. They keep pointing out that they have very low murder rates and don't have guns all over the place like we do.

I live in suburban Philly and it is breaking my heart to see the murder rate continue to rise to record highs. It sickens me to see young blacks killing other young balcks. I wish I knew the answer to stopping the violence. Nothing they try is working and too many bright lights are being extinguished.

Yes, they showed some numbers on the news. IIRC, England had under 100 deaths due to guns. While New York City, had over 500. Those numbers are very shocking. It's obvious the U.S. has a problem with guns.

I thought everyone might find this interesting. It shows the number of homicides per country for the year 2006.

NationMaster - Statistics > Murders (per capita) by country

The UK had 850 murders with only 62 by firearms.
I don't know, but I think if I was getting murdered I would rather be shot than killed any other way. I don't want to feel pain from being cut, burnt, hung, cement shoes or whoever else these other non-gun related murders are.

thnx sweetie; interesting to see the comparisons per capita although im sure that they're not all by gun. Columbia is totally fucked up right now; there's a civil war and atrocities going on there that no one in the Western World seems to care about

Thanks for the link Sweetie. I've also found this:
BBC NEWS | Americas | Q&A: US campus killings

If you scroll down there is a map showing gun deaths per 100,000 people by country.

No one thinks everyone in the NRA is a guntoting psychopath twitching at the though of someone prying his weapon from his hands. What most of us fault the NRA for is their opposing even the most sensible gun legislation under the guise of "Oh noz, they are going to take away all our gunz! Hey hunters, they want your weapons! Hey women, they want you to be unable to defend yourself from that rapist!"

There is not a TOTAL gun ban in the UK or Oz (the only countries I know about). Hunting with guns is almost unheard of in the UK anyway, certainly for recreation. Farmers, gamekeepers, vets, etc are allowed licenced shotguns. Clay pigeon (skeet in the US?) shooting is permitted, again with licenced shotties and a tiny minority of people shoot grouse and other game birds, again with licenced rifles/shotties. Handguns of ANY kind are banned, except for specialist police squads, the military or other law enforcement agencies.

Of course there are illegal handguns in circulation and of course they are used occasionally, but the statistics still speak for themselves.

When we were in visiting my fiance's family in Birmingham, England last summer the main story on the news was problems with knives or stabbings. BUT, where the UK has us Yanks beat all to heck, is they were doing checks on the streets, taking knives they found and arresting people. They were hitting it head on!
