No! Please! Some of my favorite national parks are in Utah. The landscape is gorgeous. As one of my friends used to say, "Utah would be a great place to live if the Mormons hadn't fucked it all up."

It's so fucking primitive that the issue of gays getting married has to be voted on by people, especially those that ARE NOT GAY. It's like voting to legalize African Americans getting married. It's prejudiced and uncalled for. It embarrasses me that we still have to deal with this archaic bullshit.

I'm boggled! Being black, yellow, brown or pink is also "not a civil right". What exactly do you believe a civil right is?

Look, it's pretty obvious you know absolutely nothing about the distribution of powers and basic Constitutional rights of the US. Please, really, PLEASE educate yourself for the good of us all.

Living in a country where the vast majority of people have no clue about the fundamentals of their government is becoming a nightmare (which is why I've taken a break.)

You feel that people only deserve civil protections if their minority status is obvious?

    OMFG!!!!

Sexual orientation is not a civil rights issue, it is a marriage issue, hence should be decided state by state.
No, it's perfectly legal to discriminate based on sexual orientation. Join the other thread which talks about the high costs and fragility of the lives led by gay people who cannot marry or enjoy the same family rights as you and I. THAT'S discrimination - pure and simple.

Investigate on your own how gay couples are not allowed to be each other's Next Of Kin in a medical emergency (and the chaos that ensues from the intervening families.) Find out how families are blown apart when foster children, ready to be adopted by gay couples (who have taken care of them for years) when some minor blood relative (who the child has never met) storms the courtroom with the big hate on homos.

But no you, and ppl like you, think that's all okay since states can vote for any laws they like. WRONG!!!! Inter-racial marriage was illegal for decades in many states (even in Yankeeland.) The voters approved it.

Is this the kind of country you live in - one without a basic Constitution which protects all minorities?

And just to remind you - we are all minorities in some way. If one minority is discriminated against by bogus vote, you could be next.

You make a strong point. There's nothing to stop the gov't from singling out any minority and making us vote as to whether or not they deserve basic rights (i.e. gays and lesbians), because the gov't is so large and has so much damn power over us. It shouldn't even be an issue, that's the problem. Couples in interracial marriages shouldn't have to ask for anyone's damn permission to get married, nor should anyone else (as long as they're both consenting adults). Not only are we doing the minority party in question a disservice, we're doing ourselves one as well. Who's next?
EVERYONE deserves fair treatment, zero discrimination, and the right to take advantage of the same freedoms and liberties as the rest of us law abiding citizens.

Said this before but it probably bears repeating. In 20, 30, 50 (hopefully not that long) years, people as a whole will be just as mortified-ashamed over this as they are now over black people once being legally discriminated against, and how once upon a time being openly bigoted was not only a way of life, it was socially acceptable.

That's what makes having the internet now so kick ass. In 20 years, all these bigoted views and comments and the people who spouted them will still be on record and easily accessible. Perhaps this will allow for greater accountability one day.
