I know right, people complain about health care for no reason at all! They just didn't know about the magic free hospital!

Yeah, ask anyone who works at one or has been to one how well they work.

    Worked at one.

No, it's not free for anyone and everyone. If there's a nickel in your possession (in actual dollars or insurance worth) they will sniff it out and grab you by the ankles and shake it out of you if you don't hand it over willingly.

Now, they WILL (generally) treat everyone who walks in the door. But for free is certainly a fallacy. You and your entire family better be living on govt. assistance without a dollar to your name (save what you get from the govt) or they will shake it out of you for that bill. They WILL work with you and develop a "payment plan" for those thousands of dollars you might be hock for if you're not someone with a negative cash flow.

i was turned away at a free clinic that i used to fucking volunteer at and even gave a small donation to once! they just looked at me when i arrived and said NO basically

luckily planned parenthood will help me if i need it. if i have an extra $20.00, i've been known to send them a check every now and then.

State Health Clinics can NOT turn down anyone who presents themselves for treatment no matter how much or how little they have. Any person who goes to a State Health Clinic who has the ability to pay will be billed for their Health Care - but regardless of whether they pay or not they will NOT be denied the health care they request concurrently or at any time in the future.

If someone shows up in emerg having a heart attack or stab wound, it's triage care. They take whoever is hurt worst if they can't take both.
Listening to the ambulance frequencies on my scanner, you wouldn't believe the shit EMS gets called out for. A few of my personal favourites are: "Patient has a headache" and "patient can't get to sleep"

FWIW, about 8 years ago my grandfather was diagnosed with Leukemia, and was getting treatment within a week. There was no "wait time" for his cancer treatment.
I've also never had to get a second opinion or deal with 'wait time' for x-rays. When I needed an x-ray, my dr. gave me the referral, I went to the x-ray clinic across the road, got the x-rays done, and was out within 45 minutes.

Actually, they do turn people down. I've seen it happen, just as Alice's example of it happening to her at that free clinic. And the fact that they'll take everyone (or that they're supposed to in theory) does not mean that it is free for everyone, just as my post stated, also from personal experience (as an employee, not a patient).

When I went to the doctor (and then the ortho doc) here, you were lucky if you ONLY had a 45 minute wait in the waiting area before actually getting in to see the doc.
