Remember during the campaign, when Obama would speak at an event and have all these people in the background? They didn't just happen to end up there. They were picked and placed behind him, to represent whatever the event was going for. Its called 'the halo' meaning, the halo of people that will surround him on a TV screen.

Likewise, if he was giving a speech without a crowd in the background, the backdrop was always arranged. Everything got covered up: no signs, no logos, etc. It isn't just religious things that are covered up- its everything. This is for obvious reasons: if he spoke in front of something that was controversial, it would be latched onto. So they just cover everything up and control the background imagery. They bring in these stands to hang drapery behind him, and American flags. Unless he's speaking at a University event, in which case there'd be the university crest, or at a union hall there'd be the union logo, etc.
Totally true. Obama has had the same backdrop for almost all of his public press events since he was elected: blue curtains and a bunch of flags. This is much ado about nothing.

No president is going to sit and give a speech surrounded or flanked by religious iconography, especially if it's going to be recorded. It's not good politics. Talking about religion is one thing, actively looking like you're promoting it on camera is another

They were looking for consistency, and they don't want to promote religion, unless they're filming in an actual church

It's not promoting religion - he was visiting a university to make a speech. It is political correctness gone mad.

If it's common sense, then why is he the only head of state to request it?

It could be for his safety also. It's bad enough for the crazies that some Muslin is brazen enough to orate their fascist socialism, let alone right in front of a cross.

This doesn't have anything to do with political correctness. As said earlier, the Obama Administration has used virtually the same background for Obama's public statements and appearances: blue curtains/drapes and a bunch of American flags. He had the same background when signing the stimulus bill at a nature & science museum in Denver, yet I never heard people complaining that Obama is against science because of it.

They totally draped that curtain specifically to smother the evolution exhibit behind them! Where are the scientists to denounce this outrage and slander?

I think people misconstrued the request as one in which Obama wanted to cover up everything indicative of a religious setting... the article and the headline kind of lead me to believe that initially. But, when I read Cali's thoughts on it it makes sense that his team would ask for a lot of stuff to be covered up-- for all we know they might have covered up unreligious signs or posters that might have appeared in the shot.
