I hate this utopian idea that Obama being president means racism has disappeared. I'm depressed with some of the anti-black comments i've read since Kanye west's outburst. It apparently proves that all black people are horrible and can't help being rude to white girls

It's beyond blatantly obvious, but good for Carter for saying the words.

Mostly because it's so hypocritical, most the stuff that they are blaming on Obama was done by Bush. Not that I've agreed with all of Obama's methodology and caving to a nonexistent minority, but since there is really no reasonable rationale behind the name-calling and protests (or if there is, it's VERY well hidden under pure hatred and a level of stupid I can't fathom) most of us are really left with racism as the only explanation.

^ As far as level of stupidity, check out the YouTube video Grimmlok posted in the thread "Marvel at teh stoopit." Priceless.

That's the one good thing about all of this racism bubbling up. It shatters that myth of a post-racial society.

If they are made to feel they cannot be forthright with their opinions we will see an uprising as we did against Bush. That will not help us. This is new terriotory and there are fine lines to be walked.
That's not really true that if you criticize Obama, you're suddenly a racist. There's a difference between just criticizing his policies for ideological reasons, and losing your mind to the point where you believe his policies are influenced by his being a socialist/Muslim/non-American terrorist.

But even the socialist tag isn't racist. Conservatives have always been opposed to Progressive ideas. The two philosophies are diametrically opposed, and he's certainly not the first president to be called a socialist by his opposition, going all the way back to FDR. Even Kennedy was called a communist.

The muslim thing is flat out racism.

I know the socialist tag isn't racist by itself. But it gets rolled in with the Muslim, not born in Ameria, terrorist labels.

Jimmy Carter is right....I'm from South Carolina, born and raised.....Racism is a factor here, especially with white men 40+ and their wives who just believe what their husbands believe because they have no brain or backbone. Joe Wilson for example, there are many here just like him. Its ingrained in them to resist change of any kind and hang on to traditional, ignorant ways at all costs. Wilson was one of the main supporters for the Confederate flag and he also fought against Strom Thurmond's interracial daughter going public. They can't stand the fact that a black man was elected President and the animosity for him is unbelievable. Not all whites here feel that way, but a good many do. I'm living in Neo con hell. When a coworker stated that the President should be respected no matter what color he is, one of my white male coworkers stated that that (N-word) wasn't their President and that he had donated money to support Wilson. I had my car keyed for having an Obama/Biden magnet on it. I'm sure that some ppl. just fundamentally disagree with Obama's policies, but for a good many race is the reason...at least around here. I really should move.

^Sorry to say it, but the South still has different rules.

It's unbelievable, but it still happens in 2009.

Particularly since about 90% of those who are throwing that term around don't even know what it means.

Unfortunately, that stuff happens in the North, the Midwest and the West Coast, too. Although, the South does still have it's own vibe when it comes to race, religion, etc. I love visiting the South, but it is like a different world.

    Ain't that the truth.

You ask them what a 'socialist' is, and they don't know, but they just know that they don't like them.

What's even better is when morans put socialism and fascism in the same 'category' or using them interchangeably.
    Socialism ≠ Fascism!
