they've made a 'nutcracker" doll....but there was no controversy because it's ok to potray a woman as an emasculating ball breaker.

Let's see several women being called a nut cracker versus a race of people(including WOMEN) being called 'monkeys'. Do 'porch monkey' ring any bells. But, it is quite alright because sexism is a problem also???

    Nope- both are wrong.

the doll was bad and so was the tee shirt.

But one wasn't worse than the other

Racism doesn't trump sexism and vice versa

    ^^

i agree in theory but for some reason as a woman i can find humour in the hilary nutcracker (honestly, i found it hilarious) whereas the obama t-shirt makes me uncomfortable.
i think it's about context. i think this is offensive but for example i don't think there's anything wrong about the role robert downey, jr. took where he plays a white guy that tries to pass himself off as black.

So if we leave it up to everyone's own interpretation, then I guess theres nothing wrong with either item, because some people find these funny

This way there is no double standard at work here

It's a racial slur, that stereotypes black people as being lazy and just hanging out on the front porch all day.

I agree, nowadays people should know better, I find this to be bad in taste and also racial in nature. Fact is, an ape or chimpanzee or whatever has always been one of those things used to demonize and insult Black people throughout history. Sure Dubya also looks like a f**king chimp, but like it or not whites and apes have never been considered a racially offensive item. He could have used some other character and also got the point across, but NOOOOO, out of all possible choices he has to use a chimp.

Naahh, not racist in any shape or form (sarcasm).

I hope I didn't seem like I was attacking you. It wasn't really how I meant it.

I just really am bothered by the sexism that has really been on display here in the states lately. The racism is ugly, but more people condemn it and speak out against it. People, and it seems women especially here are silent on how sexist our country has shown itself to be. The media has been absolutely disgusting with the attacks based on gender, and the average schmuck is just as bad.

I think the shirt is totally wrong, and I think the sexist jokes at Hillary's expense are just as wrong.

I think that anyone that recognizes one has to be able to see the other, even if we are human and can still think it funny. I know we often find humor in really horrible things like death. It's normal. I get the joke with the doll, but as women we live with that every day. If your smart your called all kinds of demeaning things to keep you in your place- which to some is still barefoot and pregnant. We think we've made progress here, but it's still 'Iron my shirt' and 'Bros before Ho's'.....

...same with racism, people insult you to belittle you, make you feel less than human.

Both wrong, both ugly. But why don't women get more pissed...even if they don't walk around behaving like Andrea Dworkin fundamentalist feminists, they should still be angered by what they see and hear.

I have full blown PMS and am in angry broad mode today
