Yes, a lot of people will not be able to afford homes. A lot of people will have to scale back their McMansions. Boo hoo.
As a person who scraped together a downpayment of 5% and had the common sense to get a 5.5% fixed rate mortgage, and to buy a house that we could actually afford and still be able to eat and go on vacations and stuff, I have little sympathy for those who overextended themselves.
Now SEE hotncmom!! Weren't you the one who said about a year/year and a half ago that everyone seemed to be buying bigger, nicer homes and didn't really appear to be making more money than you and your hub, and you wondered what you were doing wrong??? Now you know---NOTHING. You were the smart one!

I was feeling the same way as you--and I have a friend of mine that bought a 350k house (in this area that is a LOT) with an interest only loan and loaded it up with plasma's etc. She is SHITTING A BRICK RIGHT NOW and will more than likely have to sell.
Not so bad having an average, basic house. With a car that is a few years old and ok furniture. I am thanking my lucky stars for exactly that right now.

I would not have had the guts to actually take a risk like that anyway. I just wondered if someone had a special secret that we weren't privy to.

Blaming Pelosi for hurting Repubwican feewings is the most absurd and egotistical thing the House Republicans can do.

Pelosi's words are just sounds, they bounce inside the Capitol walls and then go away.

The people who don't have money for food, housing, utilities, who don't have jobs, they are still here! They have nothing to do with the partisanship, and yet the House Republicans are going to make them pay for it dearly just because "Nancy said stuff! waah waah!"

John McCain was supposed to deliver 100 House Republican votes. He only delivered 65. Democrats were supposed to deliver 120 House Democratic votes, they delivered 140.

"We're optimistic that Senator McCain will bring House Republicans on board without driving other parties away, resulting in a successful deal for the American taxpayer," said McCain spokeswoman Kimmie Lipscomb. - TIME

"What Senator McCain was able to do was to help bring all of the parties to the table, including the House Republicans, whose votes were needed to pass this" - McCain campaign top aide Steve Schmidt, Meet the Press, September 28, 2009

Because McCain was the one that tried to act like the hero last week by 'suspending' his campaign. And all he ended up doing was screwing things up by trying to tell House Conservatives, who hate him, how they should vote.

You're right. Dems and Republicans need to stop making this about the blame game and politics. This is a crisis that needs to be addressed now. Do what they need to and try to address it, and then toss around blame later.

The vote against the measure was 228 to 205

    93 Dems voted no......why???

Pelosi can blame the GOP all she likes.........but if some of these 93 Dems hadn't voted no it would have passed......

The Dems probably voted no because the bill didn't limit payouts to greedy corrupt corporate executives.

    Swing District Congressmen Doomed Bailout

This was predictable, I suppose, but it's remarkable to see how strong a relationship there is between today's failed vote on the bailout and the competitive nature of different House races.

Among 38 incumbent congressmen in races rated as "toss-up" or "lean" by Swing State Project, just 8 voted for the bailout as opposed to 30 against: a batting average of .211.

By comparison, the vote among congressmen who don't have as much to worry about was essentially even: 197 for, 198 against.

Actually from what I've read, the banks are starting to get too afraid to lend each other money because they're afraid of losing it. Atleast 3 banks have gone down in Europe, in radio they said it was 5.

Pelosi knew she didn't have the votes before she made the speech. Now she can put a spin on it and blame the others.
I really would like to know why all the Dems didn't vote for this bill.

no that was in the revised bill...

218 votes would have got this passed through the House....They didn't even need the GOP votes, as there are 233 dems in congress......

Think about it - the majority party is insisting that the minority party is responsible for the bill not passing with a majority. Notice any incongruency there? How can anyone take that argument seriously?
