He is a coward because he knew someone else would have to go in his place after he swore to uphold his duty. That right there is enough. You know I really blame the system that allowed this weakling to get as far as he did. I would like some ass over this guy being allowed press conferences when the Pendleton 8 are being held in solitary confinement without any evidence presented thus far!

I think you're all ASSUMING based on certain prejudices, it's very interesting.
All of us? Where did I ascribe cowardice to the man?

    I didn't.

It's interesting that you're making ASSUMPTIONS about all of us who disagree with you.

I don't care if he is motivated by cowardice or conscience. It doesn't matter.

I would like someone to explain to me why this man should make an informed decision to join an organization, receive expensive & extensive training from this organization, receive payment from this organization, and then be able to justifiably refuse to do his job.

Those of you who support this man are avoiding the issue that he chose to join the military. Having had personal experience in this matter, I can tell you that it is made abundantly clear to new folks in the beginning that you are expected to follow orders & do as you are told.

Where was his crisis of conscience then? Nonexistant is my guess, as he cruised through his assignments & collected his money.

You want to point & yell "hypocrisy?" Point at this man.

Aren't people allowed to change their minds? Circumstances have changed in Iraq. Bush & Co. lied. Repeatedly. It's a more awful Vietnam.

I don't think much of his ethics, but maybe the military is better off without him.

No, you're not allowed to change your mind in the military. That's why it's imperative to be absolutely sure when you sign the paper.

Efficient military functioning requires obedience to orders. I realize that the word "obedience" is distasteful to most of us, but it is essential in the military. Without it, missions fail & soldiers die.

This lieutenant is of an age to know about Vietnam, so he has absolutely no excuse here. He surely realized that morally ambiguous & ethically objectionable wars were a distinct possibility when he made his choice. Yet he signed up, and collected his money anyway.

he's a coward, and a thief. he went into the military fully informed & aware. he has probably recieved financial aid for school, free health care, and a paycheck plus he is entitled to loans for a home etc. and yet, when it comes time for him to do the job he signed up for, he's backing out. he should be prosecuted. and if he is so "against" Iraq, send his butt to Afghanistan.

the purpose of war, and military is NOT TO KILL people, but to protect your country

Yes, usually by killing people. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but it is what it is. What do you think all the guns, tanks, and bombs are for?

Yes, except that your country, presently run by idiots, WASN'T IN DANGER FROM THE SHATTERED NATION IT NOW OCCUPIES.

Why do people keep repeating the bullshit line of "they're defending our freedom!"

Seriously, what part of it is true? None!

Till someone can point to anything that says this guy is a coward, I'll stick with my original assessment.

Jail isn't exactly for the fainthearted either.

Helloooo? He's a coward because someone else has to go in his place. There is no honor in that. Why do you keep defending this moron? Well I can see why I guess since you have sympathy for the enemy at all times.

No, someone else going in his place is a RESULT of him refusing to go and fighting the system. Someone else would have to go if he broke his leg, fell down a flight of stairs or otherwise was rendered incapable. Would that be cowardice as well?

Well, until you can point to any instance of me having sympathy for ANY identified enemy, you can go fuck yourself for even having the temerity to suggest such a thing.

I *think*. I don't run around, flag waving, with blinders on like you. I like to look at a situation from multiple angles while you're content to exist on a 1 dimensional world of "good guys/bad guys" that doesn't actually exist outside of what you're spoonfed every day.

    Sheep are so easily led.

But Grimm, this guy chose to be a sheep.

If he's such an independent thinker, he shouldn't have chosen the Number One Leader of Sheep as his employer.

Oh this thread is good. I don't really have anything to add, except that if he was a pharmacist refusing to hand out birth control due to ethical conflicts many on this board would go apeshit ... it's the same.
