President Obama formally supports abortion, cites need for improved contracep avail

Today marks the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision by the U.S. Supreme Court. The White House press office released a powerful statement from the new President:

On the 36th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we are reminded that this decision not only protects women’s health and reproductive freedom, but stands for a broader principle: that government should not intrude on our most private family matters. I remain committed to protecting a woman’s right to choose.

While this is a sensitive and often divisive issue, no matter what our views, we are united in our determination to prevent unintended pregnancies, reduce the need for abortion, and support women and families in the choices they make. To accomplish these goals, we must work to find common ground to expand access to affordable contraception, accurate health information, and preventative services.

On this anniversary, we must also recommit ourselves more broadly to ensuring that our daughters have the same rights and opportunities as our sons: the chance to attain a world-class education; to have fulfilling careers in any industry; to be treated fairly and paid equally for their work; and to have no limits on their dreams. That is what I want for women everywhere.

The times have surely changed. This is a very respectful statement. We have NOT heard respectful language from the White House for eight years.

He's certainly starting his presidency with a bang! I love everything he's doing and saying, so much, so soon that I almost can't believe it. Someone pinch me. It's amazing to me after the Bush years.

It's nice not to have a backwards president anymore.

He is so right! I've been fuming for years that healthcare ,that I pay a huge premium for won't cover BCPs, but grandpa can get his Viagra for free through the Medicare prescription drug program. WTF is wrong with people.

It's a responsible statement.. the way to have LESS abortions (that the fundies will cheer about) is to have more and better availability and information about contraceptives.. they'll bitch about that, but WELCOME TO FUCKING REALITY.. to get less abortions, you need more condoms. Idiots.

It's a step in the right direction but making birth control freely available (and free) doesn't necessarily reduce the number of unwanted teen pregnancies and abortions. One look at the tribes of feral chav kiddies in the UK is proof of that. The message still isn't getting through that unprotected sex will get you knocked up sooner or later. But hell, the Govt will pay your way if you do get knocked up aged 15 so why not.
