Thumbs down Meet Derek, the .. sigh.. Abstinence-Only Clown

Paid for by your tax dollars. So not kidding. From Amplify Your Voice:

Derek Dye, the latest in the long, funny and sad line of abstinence-only sex education heroes. Dye uses his juggling clown schtick to draw the middle school kids’ attention, and then… Wham!

“Having sex before you are married is just like juggling machetes!”

“Sex before marriage will destroy all of your life’s dreams!”

Check out this must-see video of Dye at work in a middle school classroom:

...Thanks to George W. Bush and a complicit Congress, we currently spend $1.5 billion a year to fund abstinence-only until marriage sex education in our public schools. And yes, that money goes to people like Derek Dye, as he is employed by the Elizabeth New Life Center that received a $800,000 CBAE grant in 2007 to promote abstinence until marriage. His qualifications? A “Bachelor of Fun Arts” from Barnum Bailey Clown College, and an abstinence educator certification that can be purchased for $50....

Then again, as one colleague told me today, nothing wants to make her have sex less than a clown… so maybe they’re on to something.

I started laughing when I read the thread title but then stopped. It's hilarious that they think Abstinence only will work, but its sad because there are going to be a lot of teen pregnancys from naive teenagers who dont know about birth control or condoms

It should be "Derek the encouraging sexual dysfunction" clown.

I always alternate between finding that sort of thing disturbing as hell and hilarious. Actually, I would have kind of loved it if some fool like that attempted to talk to my school when I was a teen. Afterwards, he'd be Derek the PSTD clown.

I would have probably stood up and proclaimed loudly that Derek the retardation encouraging clown was a dumbshit.

Wtf is wrong with people. How about "Wait till you're older, it's a big decision, and don't forget to be responsible?"

SMH...If Abstinence Only worked, most republicans would have become grandparents much later on. If those girls don't put out before marriage, how would they ever get the shotgun weddings and seven month gestation babies so common in red states?

“Sex before marriage will destroy all of your life’s dreams!”
Yeah, well I guess that isn't completely true since most of my dreams have come true and then some. Nightmares also, by the way.

Don't worry about what other people think. They don't do it very often.

This is just silly, in my country there even isn't a concept of "wait till marriage". For us it's more like "wait for the right one", that it has to feel right and shouldn't be done because of peer pressure etc etc.

At fifth or sixth grade the girls and boys both get a small sex-ed. It's not even really about sex, they just explain how it happens, how women get pregnant and what prevents it but in a very non-detailed way. Since we were divided in groups (girls and boys), I don't really know what boys were told but for girls it was mostly about periods and how to deal with them. We were given pads and an info-letter that explained more about puberty and the sorts. Then later on like on 8th or 9th grade we got a more "throughout" sex-ed that was more about protection etc.
