Default Google Map showing where Prop 8 support donors live

    Information Wants To Be Free

Dreher finds a Google map that shows where prop 8 donors live:
Here is a Google map that allows you to find your way to the homes of people who donated money to Prop 8 in California. It's damn creepy, is what it is. What could possibly be the use of this kind of information, presented in this way? It's intended to intimidate people into not participating in politics by donating money. Do that, and you'll end up on some activist group's map, with hotheads being able to find your street address on their iPhones.
The second anyone does anything inappropriate with this information Dreher has a right to complain. Until then, it's public information. And Prop 8 donors and anti-Prop 8 donors knew that before they donated.

    Hrm. I'm a bit torn.

On one hand, i think "Too fucking bad, you financed bigotry"

On the other, do we really need to know where they LIVE at home?

Business are one thing, homes are another.

Then again, they're supporting the oppression of a minority.

    *ponder*

I don't have a problem with, say.. a protest happening in front of these people's houses, something peaceful. But that's highly unlikely, and all it takes is one stupid act.

Prop 8 shouldn't have been on a ballot anyway, it was unconstitutional.. why it hasn't been voided, i have no idea.

Why? Those who donated to either side knew their addresses would be public. It's part of the law.

    A reader writes:
Wow....that Google map of Prop 8 donors in California was like a gut punch to me. I was raised LDS and I have family scattered throughout the Golden State. To a person, all of them have been extremely loving and kind toward me and my partner of 15 years. On a lark, though, I zoomed in on the cities and neighborhoods where my relatives live. What do I find but that one of my own aunts, in San Diego, contributed $200 to the Prop 8 cause last summer. This same aunt, a good person I honestly believe, has even invited me and my partner to stay with in her family's home. Call me naive, but I'm kind of having trouble wrapping my brain around this seeming contradiction.
And that is surely one useful element of the map. It helps one see whom to engage. And I don't get the fear. If Prop 8 supporters truly feel that barring equality for gay couples is vital for saving civilization, shouldn't they be proud of their financial support? Why don't they actually have posters advertizing their support for discriminating against gay people - as a matter of pride?

because they don't have the courage to proclaim their bigotry for all to see and hear, they'd rather hide and do it on the sly.

These bitches have even less balls than the fuckjob 'christians'.. at least they're brave enough to hide behind Jebus in public.

What purpose could this map serve other than to pinpoint the coming attacks?

While those who donated, to either side, knew the information would be be public, what non-threatening reason supports advertising those people's homes addresses?

I hope no one is stupid enough to personally attack anyone. I don't want to see any blood shed.
