State of Alaska Refuses to Divest from…Iran?!

Thought you might all enjoy a little humorous and horrifying follow-up to the previous post on the state of Alaska’s position on Darfur divestment.

We’ve all been enthralled by the Governor’s geo-political gaffes in the past. We all remember how her definition of foreign policy included the fact that you can see Russia from a sparsely populated landmass off the coast of Alaska.

And then there were the leaks from McCain campaign insiders, after the election was over, that Palin thought “Africa” was a country, and not a continent with other countries IN it.

And now there’s this little gem which slipped under the radar up to this point. While Palin claimed to be supporting the prospect of divesting the state’s interest in Darfur, a letter was written by her staff assistant on her behalf to a representative of “Save Darfur Anchorage”. Let me quote the letter dated March 11, 2008:
Thank you for writing to Governor Palin requesting that the Alaska state pension systems divest from companies that do business in Iran.
The letter goes on to say:
The Alaska Retirement Management Board focuses on the financial returns, risks and costs to the retirement systems and is not in a position to determine or implement social, economic, or foreign policy.
So, yes. Not only was Palin’s office resoundingly NOT in favor of divestment from Darfur, but they didn’t even get the country right!

Iran….Sudan…..whatever. I mean, at least they rhyme, right?

If Palin can't see the country then it doesn't matter.

Alaska: we may not have that many people, but we're giving Illinois a run for its money regarding stupidity in government.

Yeah, but do you think you'll ever beat Ohio and/or Florida in the crazy stakes? Sure, Palin gives you a big head start but how many Palins have you got? Oh, wait, if Bristol keeps breeding you'll have plenty.

You have Palin and the first dude. Then you have Stevens, and the former governor, and a few other characters.
