Default Focus on the Family says Mitt Romney says “Mormonism is not a Christian faith”

I wasn't sure whether to put this in religion or politics.
Are Mormons Christians? Focus on the Family Says Mitt Romney Says “Mormonism Is Not A Christian Faith”

By: Teddy Partridge Wednesday December 31, 2008 3:28 pm

Tom Minnery, senior vice president of government and public policy at Focus on the Family Action, makes the extraordinary claim that Mitt Romney "has acknowledged that Mormonism is not a Christian faith."

Might this indicate the beginning of a schism in the Prop 8 coalition? After all, the Prophet said Mormons are Christians, and have always been so:
Are Mormons Christian? This article explains why Mormons are Christians which is one of the most common accusations that members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints contend with.

Answer: Yes, Mormons are Christians.

Speaking on this topic, President Ezra Taft Benson stated:

"The question is sometimes asked, Are Mormons Christians? We declare the divinity of Jesus Christ. We look to Him as the only source of our salvation. We strive to live His teachings, and we look forward to the time when He shall come again on this earth to rule and reign as King of kings and Lord of lords.
Does Mitt Romney know that James Dobson's henchman says "Mitt Romney has acknowledged that Mormonism is not a Christian faith?" Why is Focus on the Family attacking Mitt Romney and Mormons after their successful alliance to pass Prop 8 in California?

this is interesting, as until fairly recently Mormons did not wish to be called Christian.

Joseph Smith said 'Christian Denominations are all wrong ... all their creeds were an admonition in his sight, and that those professors (Christians) were all corrupt'.

I think the main difference with other Christians is the Jesus Christ of Mormonism is not the Jesus Christ of the Bible.

To the Mormons, Jesus is the firstborn son of an exalted "man" who became the god of this world. The man-god of Mormonism was made the god of this world because of his good works on another planet somewhere out in the universe. He "earned" godhood, and was appointed by a counsel of gods in to his position as the god of planet Earth.

The Mormon Jesus is the son of this man-god. The Mormon Jesus is the brother of Lucifer, and according to LDS teaching, he married several of the Marys of the New Testament. He is not, to the LDS church, "God incarnate" as the Bible states.

I read up on all this a few years back after reading Under The Banner of Heaven, which led me to No Man Knows My History and then to a few other books. It was something I really was unfamiliar with as growing up I never knew any LDS members. I actually still don't.

Mormonism always sounds particularly cultish-it seems to me like something that Joseph Smith made up just to get all the underaged ass he wanted (much like RLH and Scientology).

But then, I get cultish vibes from things like Jehovah's Witnesses and those wacky fundies too.

^Freaky. So are many things in 'mainstream' religious text (to say nothing of their many, many interpretations), but the Mormons sort of take the cake with their arrogance-they want to become GODS?

Yeah, I've never understood why Mormonism was considered a "Christian" sect. Real Christians would have a heart attack by the Book of Mormon, and don't want to be equated in any way with Joseph Smith, who represented himself as a prophet. I don't even see it as an "offshoot" of Christianity, honestly.

And Joseph Smith was a con artist. He manipulated all of his young wives and their families, telling fourteen year old girls that they could save their entire families from hellfire if they would marry him, yeah and become "gods".

And the stage is set for 2012. I wonder who the anti-Mitt candidate will be.

To any non-Mormon growing up in Utah, this is fairly obvious. Mormons want to be considered Christian because they see it as acceptance in the world. They want the outside world to accept them; however, it doesn't go the other way around. Mormons consider themselves the Chosen Ones and everyone else (including Jews) to be Gentiles.

I've actually seen ^this video before. As a non-Mormon, my confirmation class showed this video on Sunday morning so we'd know what the Mormons believed. It's interesting how much of their (Mormon) religion is about men getting laid, no matter what the circumstances. Have you ever seen the Mormon temple undergarments, what men and women married in their Mormon temples are supposed to wear? For the rest of their lives? They're supposed to wear them all the time except when bathing/showering. Even during sex!

As an atheist, I find all religions to be pretty absurd. It really annoys me when people inflict their own religious beliefs on others, as the Mormons so recently did in California.

there's a youtube video where John Safran goes into a store in Utah and buys some of the special underwear, which are actually quite disappointing. Apparently the symbols come from the Freemasons or something, there is a symbol over each nipple and one over your belly button (the top is a glorified white t-shirt) and it forms a pyramid.
