Talking Fox news cut out from questions at President Elect Obama's press conference

President-Elect Barack Obama held his first press conference yesterday, one that focused mainly on the current economic crisis.

One detail that flew under the radar, however, was which networks and newpapers got to ask questions, or, rather, which one didn't get to ask a question. As Media Bistro notes, one network who was not called upon sticks out: Fox News.

It will be interesting to see how the conservative network adjusts to a political reality in which the Democratic Party holds the White House and substantial majorities in both houses of Congress. Michael Wolff, a Vanity Fair columnist who is writing an authorized biography on Rupert Murdoch's career and family, claims that even Murdoch is embarrassed by Fox News:
Now, with about six weeks to go before publication, Mr. Murdoch has raised objections with Mr. Wolff and his publisher about portions of the book, titled "The Man Who Owns the News: Inside the Secret World of Rupert Murdoch," that suggest that Mr. Murdoch is at times embarrassed by Fox News, which he owns, and its chief executive, Roger Ailes, and that he often shares "the general liberal apoplexy," as Mr. Wolff writes in the book, toward Fox News and its perceived conservative slant...
...The objections raised on behalf of Mr. Murdoch came after an article on Mr. Murdoch and the book was published in Vanity Fair in the October issue in which Mr. Wolff wrote that Mr. Murdoch was making friends with liberals and that he had soured on Fox News and Mr. Ailes. (A 10,000-word excerpt from the book will be published in the December issue, due out early next month.)
"For a long time, he was in love with the Fox chief, Roger Ailes, because he was even more Murdoch than Murdoch," Mr. Wolff wrote in the October Vanity Fair piece. "And yet now the embarrassment can't be missed -- he mumbles even more than usual when called on to justify it; he barely pretends to hide the way he feels about Bill O'Reilly."

Murdoch's only concern is the bottom line- and if there is a new wind blowing, looks like that there might be a new executive and perhaps new commentators for the station but I doubt it.

Because everyone knows Fox News is a joke. There will always be an audience if they want to stay the course, so to speak. But it looks like the head honcho is at least playing with the idea of restoring some respectability to the station instead of pandering to extremists.

well, that is interesting, Murdoch Palinizing Roger Ailes??? Too funny, wonder if his young Chinese wife has influenced his views any.

the tide is turning. if there's one thing murdoch knows how to do it's make money. i'm guessing fox news ratings go down and they'll start trying to be more like cnn.

that or they'll go into victim mode and proclaim itself the bastion of fundie nuts and become even more extreme and populist and claim to speak for the oppressed minority silenced by the so-called liberal media and the 'socialists'. if that happens though, maybe murdoch will sell, for the sake of his reputation.

Either Fox News will start to become more moderate or they'll continue to pander to their hard-right sheep and become an all-out enemy of the administration. Remember when media outlets were crucified for daring to speak out against GW? It's flipped around now. I love it.

Waits for the other side to point out how Obama can't answer "tough questions" or whatever they do..

I wonder what kind of questions they would have asked at the press conference. They don't exactly hide their disdain for Obama.. that would have been interesting to see.

    ETA:

Comments from this Fox News article on the press conference

Of course, as a believer in the Republican philosophy, and as a conservative; my preference would have been to have a president of that political party; having said that, it was not to be.
Barack Obama has worked very hard and gets the prize. Of course the prize is wrapped in a lot of “paper.” It’ll take time to unwrap it.
Will someone tell me whether Barack Obama is a legitimate U.S. Citizen. Where was he born in the U.S.of A? There appeared some doubt about his origen.
I feel that Barack will uphold the Constitution for awhile at least. I would hope he doesn’t use tobacco, I would hope that he treats the wealthy as much as the middle class and not give their hard earned money away. I hope he doesn’t make the U.S.A. a socialistic entity. I hope he doesn’t raise taxes on anyone, rich, poor, or in between.
I hope he doesn’t give an inch to those Californians who are so liberal they allow gay marriages. I hope he doesn’t allow Sunday to be a forced day of worship; when Saturday is the true God-ordained day of worship. I hope he doesn’t become a patsy for the middle East leaders.
I hate to see President Bush leaving office. The older folks recall the days of FDR and the Dems; they were a different breed than todays Dems. They were more conservative, at least middle of the road types. JFK was too. Then came a change in the Dems and the country went downhill fast. The Republicans stepped in to assist and did a good job keeping us safe and the economy appeared good until recently. Nancy Pelosi didn’t help any in her blatherations. We really suffered when the Dems came in and goofed up the works!
So, Barack Obama, while you’re a gifted orator and have leadership potential, we’ll see whether you can win us Republicans over to your perceptions, conceptions, plans, and ideals. I think it’s safe to say we’re ready to see and support reasonable programs that help all Americans!
    Respectfully,
    Paul E.Tooley Sr
You will never be my President. You bought it. You bought it from a man who has served his whole life for our country. Hope you are happy.
Fox news, I noted obama did not ask you for any questions ? Have you guys been thrown off the airplane ? I suspect those called upon to ask questions were plants (with the brain power of plants). I suspect the questions asked were given to the “clown reporters”. obama does fear questions which have not already been screened because like Biden he will put his foot in his mouth and has done so several times.
This administration may come to be know as the administration which has had to ask forgiveness the most. Both these guys have “foot in mouth disease”.
at my seance they predicted o bama will be tried and convicted of felony fraud for mis representing himself as a properly vetted natural born citizen… final verdict demanded 12 01 08 SUPREME COURT DECISION……..OBAMA you are ordered to produce…… A VALID BIRTH CERTIFICATE…..A PLEDGE OF ALLEGEANCE……PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP…ETC… read obamacrimes.com or you can wait till the 24 electors file a complaint of deception on your part for mis representing your actual status of being a NATURAL BORN CITIZEN as required by our AMERICAN CONSTITUTION……. coming soon to a court near you……………………….

I hate to say this but I don't like this decision.
As much as it pains me to say this, Faux News is as legitimate as the other majors. They may be fear-mongering, extreme right wing, lying, douche nozzles, but to exclude them from a press-conference isn't right.

No, they aren't legitimate. They've been widely derided as a right-wing mouthpiece. Nobody in the "news" business takes them seriously, and the only way they get people to tune in is by being OPINION MEDIA.. not news. They've been repeatedly cited for ridiculously biased 'reporting'.

Fuck em. They played like assholes before, so they get burned now. If they asked REAL questions, and not bullshit, they wouldn't be in this position.

This was his first press conference as President Elect. There were dozens of reporters there, and he took questions from 9, so lots of others got passed over as well.

Fox didn't even consider the press conference important enough to have anyone other than their embedded reporter cover it. So, Obama passed up a question from someone that has traveled with his campaign and has had access to him for months...big deal.

How fair is it if he has to take questions from Fox News every single press conference just to "prove" something? Should other news agencies lose their opportunities in order to give Fox preferential treatment? Should Obama stay and answer every question at a press conference so that nobody ever feels left out?

People need to grow up and stop being so petty. It's one thing to complain if you are always excluded, but to start whining right off the bat is just childish.

I wouldn't mind if fox was relegated to never getting a word in, considering what a ridiculous organization it is.'

Here we go trying to shut out opinions if they are not hold by the Obama lovers.

Obama + McCain = Bush. We are fucked no matter what. At least I didn't vote for him. I can't wait until he starts filling up my gas tank and paying my Mortgage ... In 2012 I hope we get a libertarian.
