Wink You betcha, Sarah Palin claims 1st Amendment rights threatened by criticism

In a conservative radio interview that aired in Washington, D.C. Friday morning, Republican vice presidential nominee Gov. Sarah Palin said she fears her First Amendment rights may be threatened by "attacks" from reporters who suggest she is engaging in a negative campaign against Barack Obama.
Palin told WMAL-AM that her criticism of Obama's associations, like those with 1960s radical Bill Ayers and the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, should not be considered negative attacks. Rather, for reporters or columnists to suggest that it is going negative may constitute an attack that threatens a candidate's free speech rights under the Constitution, Palin said.

"If [the media] convince enough voters that that is negative campaigning, for me to call Barack Obama out on his associations," Palin told host Chris Plante, "then I don't know what the future of our country would be in terms of First Amendment rights and our ability to ask questions without fear of attacks by the mainstream media."
Salon's Glenn Greenwald explains why this argument is frighteningly wrong:
If anything, Palin has this exactly backwards, since one thing that the First Amendment does actually guarantee is a free press. Thus, when the press criticizes a political candidate and a Governor such as Palin, that is a classic example of First Amendment rights being exercised, not abridged.

This isn't only about profound ignorance regarding our basic liberties, though it is obviously that. Palin here is also giving voice here to the standard right-wing grievance instinct: that it's inherently unfair when they're criticized. And now, apparently, it's even unconstitutional.

According to Palin, what the Founders intended with the First Amendment was that political candidates for the most powerful offices in the country and Governors of states would be free to say whatever they want without being criticized in the newspapers. The First Amendment was meant to ensure that powerful political officials would not be "attacked" in the papers. It is even possible to imagine more breathaking ignorance from someone holding high office and running for even higher office?

So she's saying she is free to speak what she wants but when the press does it, it's unconstitutional?

    Right.

Frankly I'm surprised that she even knows the First Amendment deals with free speech. She must've retained that during her pre-Couric cram session and tucked it away in her little tiny brain for self-serving purposes later on.

That, and at how many people buy her shit.

Last time I checked, McCain/Palin was at 42% in the polls. That's 42 out of 100 American people. Who in the fuck are these buffoons? WTF? The mind boggles.

I said four years ago that if Bush was re-elected, that the American people deserved what they got and I was moving out of the country. I pussied out and didn't move. I'm thinking the same thing this year if McCain gets elected.

Honestly. I travelled out of the country this past summer, and was embarassed to have to claim that I was American. No funny intended, I really was. America is a laughingstock, and what's worse is that we deserve to be.

Considering that she actually wants to rewrite the Constitution she should probably just shut the fuck up.

This is a woman who runs around saying Obama is a socialist, a communist, a whatever and yet this kind of talk is exactly what you would find as a country slipped into a totalitarian state. This little harpy bitch thinks exactly like a dictator. Pay attention people: if McCain somehow pulls it off and then kicks the bucket we wil be faced with someone who will swiftly do everything she can to gain absolute power. I can't not even believe the breadth of her arrogance and stupidity.

It's more of the same "I can do this, but you can't" that the GOP so dearly loves.

    Nothing more.

The thing is, does that mean any and all of us could be supposedly trampling her first amendment rights? I mean, three quarters of the internet is buzzing with animosity towards this woman....are we all going to get it right between the eyes?

Today I had one of those dark thoughts that just catches you unexpectedly...

It occurred to me that if McCain-Palin were elected, and he croaked, that she would think it was a sign from God that He wanted her to execute a fundamentalist agenda. I really think that she thinks that way, and it scares the shit out of me.

I don't care how extraneous my Obama vote is here in Massachusetts, I am going to be there voting with bells on on election day.

^^I think you're on to something with that since she's does believe that the big girl upstairs is behind everything and anything--although your using the word execute makes me think in other directions as far as Palin and McCain's relationship is concerned.
